The Calvin women’s basketball team has been selected to host a four-team NCAA III Tournament regional this Friday and Saturday (March 4 and 5) at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (24-4) will face LaRoche (23-4) College (PA) in a first round game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the University of Chicago (22-3) will face Hanover (25-1) College at 5 p.m. in Friday’s opening first round game. Friday’s winning teams will play each other on Saturday in the regional final at 7 p.m. (EST). Ticket prices are as follows: Reserved lower bowl seating will be $6.00 while general admission tickets in the upper bowl will also be $6.00. Tickets for students, children over two years of age and senior citizens will be $3.00. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time through the Calvin Box Office at: Calvin Box Office. Calvin is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA III Tournament in women’s basketball. The Knights are 14-12 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play, having reached the national quarterfinals in 2005 and 2007.

For the sixth time in her career and for the third time this year, Calvin College sophomore Carissa Verkaik has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s basketball. A sophomore from Holland (Holland Christian HS), Verkaik scored 29 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked five shots in leading the Knights to a 67-65 victory over Hope in the championship game of the MIAA tournament. She averaged 26.3 points per game during Calvin’s three-game tournament run, connecting on 74 percent (32 of 43) of her field goal attempts, 67 percent (4 of 6) of her 3-point attempts and 92 percent (11 of 12) of her free throws. She also averaged nine rebounds and 4.3 blocked shots per game during the tournament.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams captured the MIAA Indoor Invitational titles on Saturday at Trine University. On the women’s side, Calvin took first place with 226.16 points with Hope second with 121.83 points. On the men’s side, Calvin posted a first place score of 188.5 points, just over 50 points ahead of second place Adrian (135.25). A big highlight for the women included an NCAA III automatic and season-best throw of 46-1 1/2 in the shot put by senior Sarah Reasoner that was good for first place. The throw places Reasoner in fourth place on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field shot put performance list. On the men’s side, Calvin received a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 51-11 1/4 in the shot put and a 1-2-3 finish in the mile run with three Calvin runners landing NCAA III provisional qualifying times. The sweep included a first place performance by senior Alex Wrobel (4:14.69), a second place finish by sophomore Greg Whittle (4:15.54) and a third place finish by junior Nick Kramer (4:15.57).

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 decision to Coe College Saturday afternoon in a match played on a neutral court. With the loss, the Knights are 0-2 on the year. Calvin opened the match by winning two of the three doubles points with the No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) winning 9-7 and the No. 2 doubles team of senior Michelle Busscher (Whitehall/Western Michigan Christian HS) winning 9-7. The doubles round gave Calvin an early 2-1 lead but the Knights were able to pick up only two of the remaining four singles points.

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Saturday night as the Knights suffered a 72-67 defeat to rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin trailed 36-29 at halftime and later fell behind by 16 points in the second half. Calvin (16-12) mounted a late rally, closing to within three at 68-65 in the final minute of play but Hope converted two free throws and then a layup in the closing seconds to seal the win. Sophomore Tom Snikkers was Calvin’s lone player in double-digits in scoring with 20 points. Calvin shot 40.0 percent from the field but just 15.8 percent (3 of 19) from three-point range. Concluding their Calvin careers were Calvin seniors Danny Rodts, Trent Salo, Brent Schuster and Brad Schnyders. In the contest, freshman Jordan Brink connected on a pair of free throws to finish the year 52-of-56 at the line for a new Calvin single-season record of 92.9 percent (minimum 50 free throw attempts). The old record had been 92.0 percent shared by Greg Broene (1973-74) and Matt Veltema (2009-10).

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A last-second three-point shot by junior guard Jill Thomas propelled the Calvin women’s basketball team into the NCAA III Tournament. A graduate of Grand Rapids West Catholic High School, Thomas sank a three-pointer from the left wing as time expired to lift Calvin to a 67-65 victory over rival and second-ranked Hope in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena. With the win, Calvin (24-4) gains an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament which is slated to start next weekend.Thomas finished the game with 11 points to go with five rebounds. Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a monster game for Calvin with 29 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Kurncz (St. Johns, MI/St. Johns HS) added 12 points and five assists.

HANOVER PARK, IL - Calvin opened its 2011 campaign with a 7-2 loss at Wheaton College Friday afternoon. Calvin’s lone victories came in singles play as senior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a 7-6, 7-5 winner at No. 1 singles while senior Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 winner at No. 2 singles. Senior Michelle Busscher (Whitehall/Western Michigan Christian HS) dropped a tough three-set match at No. 3 singles while Oosterhouse and Spoelhof were edged 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Oosterhouse is now 60-11 in her Calvin singles career. Calvin will return to play on Saturday when it takes on Coe College (IA) in the Wheaton area.

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team defeated Albion 68-53 in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament Friday night at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin will face rival Hope Saturday night in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at 7:30 p.m. Calvin led 25-20 at halftime but broke loose in the second half by connecting on its first six three-point attempts in the second half. Senior Trent Salo was the catalyst for the Calvin second half surge with three second half trifectas. Senior Brad Schnyders led Calvin in scoring with 15 points including 11 in the first half. Brent Schuster had 11 points and Salo 10. Saturday’s MIAA Tournament title game will mark the 179th meeting between Calvin and Hope in a series that Hope leads 91-87. It will also mark the third consecutive year that the two rivals will meet in the MIAA Tournament final. The winner will receive an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament.

The 18th-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team rolled to a 63-36 win over visiting Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday night at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin (23-4) will face third-ranked Hope (26-1) in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Hope defeated Trine 66-47 in Thursday’s other semifinal game. Calvin led 33-18 at halftime and limited Albion (14-13) to 17 percent field goal shooting in the second half as the Knights continued to widen the gap. Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 23 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Sophomore Ally Wolffis added 10 points and three blocked shots.

The All-MIAA men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been announced and six members of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team have received all-conference honors while two members of the men’s team have been so honored. Selected to the women’s All-MIAA team from Calvin are senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS), sophomores Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI/Home Schooled), Shelby Cloyd (Kalamazoo/Plainwell HS), Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) and freshman Elise Kaufman (Sugarland, TX/Clements HS).
