Track and Field Teams Compete at Mike Lints Invitational

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the unscored Mike Lints Open hosted by Grand Valley State University Friday night. Click the headline above for meet highlights. Both teams will now prepare to host the first-ever Calvin Indoor Track and Field Invitational next Friday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center on the Sturrus Track. The four competing teams at the invitational will Alma, Aquinas, Calvin and Hope. Action is slated to start at 3 p.m.

Women’s Swimming & Diving Team Defeats Kalamazoo/Men’s Team Defeated by Hornets

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team defeated MIAA foe Kalamazoo 155-140 at the Venema Aquatic Center in dual meet action while the Calvin men’s team was defeated by Kalamazoo 191-106. The Kalamazoo women entered Saturday’s meet ranked 17th nationally but the Calvin women’s team used depth in its lineup and decisive 1-2-3 sweeps in both the one and three-meter diving competitions to gain the win. The Calvin women’s team is now 4-3 overall including 4-0 against MIAA teams. On the men’s side, the Knights were defeated by sixth-ranked Kalamazoo. The Calvin men are now 2-4 in dual competition this year including 1-3 against MIAA opponents.

Men’s Basketball Moves Into Tie for Second Place in MIAA Standings With 74-68 Win Over Trine

Calvin improved its conference record to 4-2 with a 74-68 victory over Trine on Saturday. Calvin is now tied for second place in the MIAA standings with Albion and Adrian. The win marked the first time Calvin has put back-to-back conference victories together this year. Senior Danny Rodts led the Knights with 19 points. Calvin was led in scoring by Rodts with 19 points while freshman Jordan Brink had 12 and sophomore Tom Snikkers 10. Ian Jackson led Trine with 22 points.

Women’s Basketball Opens Second Half of MIAA Schedule With 74-60 Win Over Saint Mary’s

Calvin rolled to a 74-60 victory over MIAA foe St. Maryís on Saturday.The Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes after a Logan Marsh fast break lay-up began the scoring.Calvin led by as much as 20 in the first half, thanks largely to sophomore Julia Hilbrandís scoring input.  Hilbrands recorded nine points in the first half.  The Knights led 39-25 at half time. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik led the Knights with 20 points and 12 rebounds to notch her 21st collegiate double-double.  Hilbrands tallied a career high 19 points.  Sophomore Ally Wolffis also notched 14 points and six rebounds.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Picks Up Dual Meet Victory at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team picked up a 179-113 dual meet victory at Saint Mary’s Friday night. The Calvin women are now 3-3 in dual meet action this year including 3-0 against MIAA competition.  Calvin’s divers highlighted the dual meet with strong performances in both the one and three-meter boards. On the one-meter board, sophomore Sam Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took first place with a season-best and NCAA III qualifying score of 262.04. On the three-meter board, Kaufman took first place (246.59) while Klaasen was second (245.03) and Brummel third (227.48). Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 1 p.m. at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

Video Highlights of Calvin/Hope Women’s Basketball Game Now Online

Calvin student video producer Mike Zaagman has put together a video package of Calvin’s thrilling 56-55 upset victory over top-ranked Hope Tuesday night in women’s basketball. The victory snapped Calvin’s eight-game losing skid to Hope and put the Knights on top of the MIAA standings. Zaagman’s video package includes a near half-court shot by Jill Thomas at the close of the first half as well as the thrilling final seconds of regulation.

Women’s Basketball Keeps Foot on the Gas In 81-37 Victory Over Trine

The Calvin women’s basketball team showed no signs of a letdown Thursday night in an 81-37 victory over the visiting Trine University Thunder. The victory came just two days after an emotional 56-55 victory over rival Hope. With the win over Trine, Calvin (14-3 overall) finishes the first half of the MIAA schedule with an unbeaten 8-0 record, one game ahead of 7-1 Hope and two games ahead of 6-2 Albion. Sophomore Ally Wolffis had 15 points to lead Calvin in scoring while sophomore Carissa Verkaik had 12 points. Senior guard Allie Duernberger (pictured left), junior guard Jill Thomas and sophomore center Julia Hilbrands added nine points apiece.

Men’s Basketball Gets Back on Winning Track With 73-64 Win at Alma

ALMA - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 73-64 road win at Alma College Wednesday night, allowing the Knights to even their season record at 8-8 and improve to 3-2 in league play. The Knights are now locked in a three-way tie for third place in the MIAA standings with Adrian and Kalamazoo, one game behind MIAA co-leaders Albion and Hope who are both 4-1. Sophomore Tom Snikkers led the Knights with 19 points and nine rebounds while senior Danny Rodts (Niles/Niles HS) had 15 points and senior Brad Schnyders (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) 13 points off the bench. Calvin will host Trine University on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Calvin ‘s Van Noord Arena.

Women’s Basketball Upsets Top-Ranked Hope 56-55 at Van Noord Arena

In a clash of MIAA powers, Calvin topped top-ranked rival for the first time in nine games.The Knights prevailed 56-55 after a last second jump shot by Hope fell short.  The victory advances Calvin to 7-0 in conference and 13-3 overall. It also snapped Hope’s 35-game MIAA regular season win streak. The Knights are now in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings, one game ahead of Hope and Albion. It also marks the second time that Calvin has upset the Dutch as a top-ranked opponent, doing the same in 2007 in a 60-57 triumph at Hopeís DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin is now 25-4 all-time at Van Noord Arena and is 2-0 this year at home against top-10 ranked opponents. Calvin also defeated (then) fifth-ranked Carthage 69-59 on December 8 at home.

Calvin Women 2nd - Calvin Men 3rd at U. of Chicago Swimming & Diving Invitational

U. of Chicago Invitational Final Meet Results

CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the University of Chicago Invitational late Saturday night. The Calvin women finished the two-day meet in second place with 942 points while the Calvin men took third with 624.5 points. Host Chicago won the women’s meet with 1,251 points and the men’s meet with 1,036.5 points.Highlighting the evening for the Calvin men on Saturday was freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) who won the three-meter diving competition with an NCAA III qualifying score of 497.10. In the women’s meet, Calvin received victories from sophomore Stephanie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.17), sophomore Elizabeth Counsel (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.08) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.94) and senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.25) with Bressler also taking third in the 100 freestyle (55.79).
