Calvin Men’s Basketball Coaching Staff Participates in NABC’s Suits and Sneakers Weekend

The members of the Calvin men’s basketball coaching staff participated in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Association’s Coaches vs Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend this past Saturday. During Calvin’s games against Hope which included a junior varsity game at 12:30 followed by a 3 p.m. varsity contest, every member of the Calvin coaching staff wore sneakers with their suits to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. The Hope College coaching staff also participated in the event. The Calvin coaching staff included head coach Kevin Vande Streek and assistant coaches Tim VanDyke, Jeff Krosschell, Ricky Shilts and student assistant coach Matt Veltema. By lacing up sneakers with their suits on the event’s seventh annual awareness weekend, college and high school basketball coaches across the country this past weekend spotlighted the fact that while cancer remains a major health concern, everyone can take daily steps to reduce their risk of the disease. Men’s Basketball Falls to Hope In Rivalry Game 76-70

At one point leading by 18, the Knights dropped a six-point decision to rival Hope on Saturday afternoon, falling 76-70 in the 178th edition of the Calvin-Hope rivalry. Calvin led 42-29 at halftime but Hope turned the tables in the second half, outscoring the Knights 47-28 over the final 20 minutes of play to gain the win. Hope now takes a two-game lead over Calvin, Adrian and Kalamazoo in the MIAA standings with a 7-1 conference mark while the Knights are in a three-way tie for second at 5-3.

Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Standings With 75-40 Win Over Kalamazoo

As the current league leader Calvin defended its place atop the MIAA standings Saturday night with a 75-40 victory over the Kalamazoo Hornets Saturday night at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Sophomore post Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI) led the Knights with 16 points and 8 rebounds.  Sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids, MI) also chipped in 12 points while grabbing 5 boards.Calvin boasted a powerful inside game Saturday night as the Knights outscored the Hornets in the paint 50-10.  Kalamazoo not being able to stop the Knights inside also allowed the perimeter shooters to have a number of looks as Calvin shot 36.4 percent from outside on 4 of 11 shooting.

Calvin Track & Field Teams Emerge Victorious at First-Ever Calvin (Indoor) Invitational

Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams emerged victorious in their third meet of the young season. Their victories came at their own Calvin Invitational.The meet, which consisted of local rivals Hope, Alma, and Aquinas, was held in the Huizenga Track and Tennis Center on the Sturrus Track.  It marked the first time Calvin has hosted an indoor event and the first time since 2007 that Calvin has hosted any sort of track and field meet.The men prevailed with a score of 183.  Hope followed with 143 points and Aquinas and Alma rounded out the meet with scores of 114 and 82.5, respectively.As a team, the Calvin women squeaked out a victory with 155 points, a half-point ahead of Hope which garnered 154.5 points. Aquinas scored 126.5 and Alma scored 87 points.  Calvin’s 4x400 relay team propelled the Knights to their late lead with a first place finish of 4:07.  The relay consisted of freshman Julie Busscher, Olivia Butler, junior Jordan Gabrielse, and Rachel Boerner.

Women’s Basketball Team Picks Up 62-36 Road Win at Albion

ALBION - The Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 16-3 overall and to 10-0 in the MIAA with a 62-36 victory at Albion Wednesday evening. Calvin trailed 15-10 midway through the first half but ripped off 13 unanswered points to build a 23-15 lead and never looked back. Calvin was led in scoring by sophomores Kelsy Irwin and Ally Wolffis with 12 points apiece with Irwin going 4-for-4 from three-point range. As a team, Calvin was 9-of-19 from beyond the three-point arc for a 47.4 percent three-point clip. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik also had 10 points, six boards and three blocked shots while sophomore Julia Hilbrands chipped in with eight points and five rebounds off the bench for the Knights.

Men’s Basketball Rolls to 81-50 Win Over Albion - Now Tied With Adrian for Second Place in MIAA

Midway through the conference season, the Knights came up with a huge 81-50 victory over the Britons of Albion. At the midpoint of the MIAA schedule, the Knights are tied for second place in the league standings with Adrian at 5-2, one game behind league-leading Hope (6-1). Calvin maintained the lead throughout the game and limited the Britons to 30.2% shooting.Calvin was led in scoring by Schuster and sophomore Tom Snikkers, who each had 15 points.  Rodts scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Calvin will host Hope on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena in the 178th meeting between the two long-time rivals.

Bret Otte Talks Indoor Track & Field as Knights Prepare to Host Calvin Invitational

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the first indoor competition inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center on the Sturrus Track this Friday. Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m. In addition to Calvin, competing teams will include Aquinas, Alma and Hope. The meet will be a scored competition. The meet is open to the public and there is no admission charge. Calvin head men’s and women’s track and field coach Bret Otte sat down recently to discuss the upcoming Calvin Indoor Track and Field Invitational as well as the current indoor season. Women’s Basketball Back in d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Calvin women’s basketball team has moved back into the d3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 23rd in this week’s poll, marking the third time Calvin has been nationally-ranked. The Knights were in the poll in the 24th spot prior to taking a trip to California over Christmas break but dropped out of the poll during the first week of January. Thomas More (KY) is this week’s top-ranked team by d3hoops.com.

Calvin picked up three conference victories last week to improve to 15-3 overall and to 9-0 in the MIAA. The Knights will travel to Albion on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Ally Wolffis Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Saint Mary’s guard Maggie Ronan and Calvin forward Ally Wolffis its Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 22. Wolffis, a sophomore from Muskegon (Mona Shores HS), scored 36 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the week as the Knights won three straight games to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. She scored seven points, including a key basket and free throw down the stretch, as Calvin handed top-ranked Hope its first loss of the season, 56-55 on Tuesday night. The Calvin victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against Hope and allowed the Knights to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.

David Rietema Broadens Horizons While Studying in Honduras During First Semester

“Student-athlete” may be a foreign term for many of today’s high profile athletes who just happen to attend college.  After spending last semester abroad in Central America, Calvin sophomore and member of the basketball team David Rietema, took the term back to its origins, proving that at Division III schools across the country, “student athlete” remains appropriate terminology. Along with a number of other Calvin students, Rietema spent the fall semester in Tegucigalpa, the capitol of Honduras.  There, he studied Spanish and International Development.  The students lived with host families and studied in a Honduran university under professors hired by Calvin.
