KENOSHA, WI - A five-minute stretch to open the second half proved to be the undoing for the Calvin men’s basketball team Friday night at the MIAA/CCIW Challenge as the Knights suffered an 86-64 defeat to the Wheaton College Thunder. Calvin was led in defeat by senior Brad Schnyders (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) who tossed in 13 points off the bench while sophomore Tom Snikkers (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) had 11 points. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces Carthage - the host of the four-team MIAA/CCIW Challenge - at 4 p.m. (EST).

The Calvin and Hope hockey teams will renew their rivalry Friday night at the Eagles Ice Center at 7:30 p.m. Calvin will enter the game with an overall record of 10-4-1 while Hope will enter the game with an overall record of 13-1. The two teams will play again on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Edge Ice Arena in Holland.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened up competition at their own Calvin Winter Invitational Thursday night. Thursday’s competition featured just two events - the 1,650 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay. After day one, Calvin is in third place in the women’s standings with 61 points while the Knights are fourth in the men’s standings with 48 points

KALAMAZOO - With her husband coaching to her left and her son coaching to her right, Carol Shilts figured she was a in a win-win situation Wednesday night. “I figured no matter what the final outcome, a Shilts would win,” she said with a laugh at the conclusion of Wednesday’s meeting between the Calvin men’s junior varsity basketball team and the Kalamazoo Valley Community College squad. She was right.In a special meeting between father-and-son, Kalamazoo Valley Community College prevailed over the Calvin men’s junior varsity basketball team 68-50. The host Cougars were led by longtime coach Dick Shilts who went head-to-head for the first time against his son Ricky Shilts who is in his first year as the Calvin men’s junior varsity coach.

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s basketball team opened its 2010-11 MIAA campaign with a 75-40 victory at Adrian Wednesday night. Calvin (4-2 overall, 1-0 MIAA) is now 7-1 in MIAA openers under head coach John Ross. Calvin jumped out to a 35-17 halftime lead, connecting on 53.6 percent of its field goals in the first half. The Knights then shot 61.5 percent in the second half as they continued to stretch the lead. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) led the Knights with 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting while junior Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns HS) had a big evening with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting including 2-of-2 from three-point range. Sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also tossed in a career-high 13 points off the bench.
