As non-conference play continues for the Knights here in this 2010-11 season, Calvin underwent what looked to be its toughest tests thus far as the Knights took on the fifth-ranked Carthage College Lady Reds. Coming into the game with a 5-2 record, the Knights handed Carthage its first loss of the season [6-1] with a decisive victory at home in the Van Noord Arena, winning by a score of 69-59. As a team, Calvin connected on 13-of-26 from three-point range, establishing a Van Noord Arena record for three-pointers made in a women’s game. The 13 triples are the highest total in a Calvin women’s basketball game since January 21, 2009, when the Knights were 14-of-28 from beyond the arc in an 81-63 win at Olivet.
Calvin Lands Five on All-Central Region Men’s Soccer Teams

Five members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have been named to National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III All-Central Region soccer teams as sponsored by Performance Subaru. Named to the first team from Calvin are senior Dan Kmetz and junior Justin Ahearne while junior Miles Colago has been named to the second team and seniors Ryan Bratt and Scott Hooker named to the third team. As members of the first team, Kmetz and Ahearne are now eligible for NSCAA Division III All-America consideration.

An NCAA produced highlight video of the 2010 NCAA III Women’s Volleyball Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, is now online. The video includes clips from all seven matches played at Washington University of St. Louis including Calvin’s victories over University of Massachusetts Boston, Juniata and Emory University.

The national champion Calvin women’s volleyball also ranks at the top of the list in two categories in the final 2010 NCAA III statistics released earlier today. Calvin led the nation in blocks-per-set in 2010 (2.8 blocks-per-set) and in hitting percentage with a .313 clip as a team. Calvin also finished 20th nationally in assists-per-set (11.96) and 25th in kills-per-set (12.89). Individually, Calvin junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) finished third nationally in hitting percentage (.431), sixth in blocks-per-set (1.37), 10th in points-per-set (5.25) and 23rd in kills-per-set (.406).

Big Week Ahead for Calvin Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams

A big week of action is on tap for the Calvin men’s and women’s basketball teams this week. On Wednesday, the Calvin women’s basketball team will host unbeaten and fifth-ranked Carthage College (6-0) at 7 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. On Saturday, the Knights will journey to Kalamazoo for a 3 p.m. conference game. On the men’s side, Calvin is preparing to travel to Palos Heights, Illinois, on Saturday for a 6 p.m. (EST) matchup against Trinity Christian College. The varsity game will be preceded by a 4 p.m. (EST) contest between the Calvin and Trinity Christian College junior varsity teams.In last Saturday’s 88-80 loss to nationally-ranked Carthage College, Calvin sophomore Tom Snikkers (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) scored a career-high 33 points. Swimming & Diving Teams Wrap Up Competition at Calvin Winter Invitational

The second annual Calvin Winter Invitational concluded on Saturday with the Calvin women’s team finishing second with 549 points while the Calvin men’s team took fifth with 296 points. Grand Valley State won both competitions with its third-ranked men’s team finishing with 1,331 points while its top-ranked women’s team garnered 1,223 points. Kalamazoo took second in the men’s standings with 597 points and was third behind Calvin in the women’s competition with 464.5 points.

KENOSHA, WI - A career-high 33 points by sophomore forward Tom Snikkers were not enough to lift the Calvin men’s basketball team to victory as the Knights were defeated by nationally-ranked Carthage 88-80 on the second day of competition at the MIAA/CCIW Challenge. Snikkers also grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his 33 points to post his first collegiate double-double. Senior Danny Rodts also had 17 points for the Knights while Schnyders chipped in with eight points off the bench.

NOTRE DAME, IN - Calvin remained unbeaten in the MIAA with a 76-55 victory at St. Mary’s on Saturday. The win advanced its record to 2-0 in conference and 5-2 overall.The Knights opened up a double digit lead in the middle of the first half and didn’t look back. They finished the half up by 10. The deficit would never drop below that. Calvin began the second half on fire, scoring six unanswered points, all of them from the paint. Ally Wolffis had four of those, en route to a career high 21 points.

In front of a capacity crowd at the Eagles Ice Arena, the Knights hockey team emerged victorious in a clash with arch-rival Hope on Friday. Calvin defeated the Dutch by a score of 4-3 with two goals from Reed Loney and single goals from Jarod Balog and Ben Regts. But the story of the night was Trevor Boardway in the net for the Knights. Early on, Calvin was faced with five minutes of short-handed play but Boardway was stellar between the pipes during the short-handed situation and continued making clutch saves for the entire 60 minutes.

With one day of competition left at the Calvin Winter Invitational, the Calvin women’s team is in second place while the Calvin men’s teams is in fifth place. Grand Valley State leads both competitions with the Lakers leading the men’s standings with 686 points and the men’s standings with 662 points. Kalamazoo is in second place in the men’s competition with 308 points while the Hornets are third in the women’s standings with 210 points. Calvin had a number of standout performances. On the women’s side, sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) had the top swim for the Knights with a third place and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 1:06.17.On the men’s side, Calvin was led by junior Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montesorri HS) with a fifth place time of 1:44.29 in the 200 freestyle, junior Greg Gorham (Minneapolis, MN) sixth in the 100 breaststroke (59.37) and freshman Andrew Kraft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) third on the one-meter diving board (404.30).
