Verkaik Just Misses Triple-Double as Knights Hold Off Albion in Key Conference Game Saturday

The Calvin women’s basketball team was pushed to the limit on Saturday by conference rival Albion but the Knights were up to the challenge down the stretch as they recorded a 73-65 victory over the Britons in a matchup of teams with undefeated MIAA records at Van Noord Arena. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik had a monster game with 30 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots, just missing a triple-double. Verkaik swished a three-pointer with 52 seconds left to play that helped seal the win over Albion (4-6 overall, 2-1 MIAA) as it gave Calvin a six-point lead. Calvin (8-2 overall, 4-0 MIAA) also received nine points from junior guard Jill Thomas and sophomore Ally Wolffis while sophomore Logan Marsh had seven points and four assists. Calvin has now won five straight games and will face Wellesley College on December 30 in a tournament hosted by California Lutheran University.

Men’s Basketball Falls 78-76 To Aquinas as Last-Second Three-Pointer Just Off The Mark

The Calvin men’s basketball team fell just short of a season sweep over crosstown rival Aquinas, falling to the Saints 78-76 Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena. Earlier this season, Calvin defeated Aquinas 61-44 but on Saturday, the Saints (7-8) turned the tables by connecting on 10 three-point shots. Calvin had a chance to win at the buzzer but an off-balance three-pointer by sophomore Tom Snikkers bounced off the rim after Snikkers pushed the ball up the court with only 4.2 seconds left to do so. Sophomore Matt DeBoer scored a career-high 17 points off the bench for the Knights while Snikkers had 15 points and seven boards. Senior Brad Schnyders also had 14 points off the bench while sophomore Bryan Powell had 12 points and five assists. Calvin (4-5) will face Benedictine (IL) on December 29 at 6:30 p.m. (EST) in a first round game of the Elmhurst Bluejay Classic.

Carly Prins Named Third Team All-American by National Soccer Coaches Association of America

NSCAA Division III Women's Soccer All-America Teams

Calvin College senior Carly Prins has joined a select group of Calvin women’s soccer players. On Wednesday, the forward out of of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School was named a third team Divison III All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A native of Hudsonville, Prins becomes the fifth individual in Calvin women’s soccer history to be named an NSCAA Division III All-American with Tara Dyk (1997 & 1998), Amber Wiersma (1997), Jill Capel (2006) and Emily Ottenhoff (2009) previously receiving the honor as Calvin players.

Calvin Coaching Corner - Installment #1

The first installment of the Calvin (men’s and women’s basketball) Coaching Corner audio program is now available. The Calvin sports information office caught up with John Ross, head coach of the Calvin women’s basketball team and Kevin Vande Streek, head coach of the Calvin men’s basketball team for the first installment this year. The Calvin women’s basketball team is off to a 7-2 start overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Knights will host Albion on Saturday at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s basketball team is off to a 4-4 start overall and will host Aquinas on Saturday at 3 p.m. Also, be sure to check back throughout the season for more installments of the Calvin Coaching Corner.

No Regrets for Amber Warners As She Accepts AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year Award

On Thursday, December 16, Calvin women’s volleyball coach Amber Warners will receive the Division III National Coach of the Year Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Warners will receive the award at the 2010 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo., site of this year’s NCAA Divison I Volleyball Final Four.  The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention which is held annually at the site of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Final Four. Calvin sports information student assistant Andrew Knot caught up with Warners before she departed for Kansas City and filed the following feature story (click on the headline above for the story).

Men’s Basketball Pulls Away for 90-79 Win at Trinity Christian To Even Season Record at 4-4

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL - The Calvin men’s basketball team picked up a 90-79 victory at Trinity Christian College Saturday night. Calvin (4-4) led by 12 points in the first half but Trinity Christian (7-7) rallied to tie the game 35-35 at halftime. In the second half, Calvin used a 9-0 run inside the final three minutes to pull away for the win. Senior Danny Rodts cashed in on two three-point shots in the late surge while junior Brian Haverdink also connected on a triple in the run. Rodts finished the game with 20 points on the strength of five three-point field goals. Six Calvin players notched double digits in scoring as Bryan Powell had 13, Tom Snikkers 12, Matt DeBoer 11 and Brent Schuster and Brad Schyder 10 points apiece. Calvin was 11 of 24 from three-point range and shot 50.8 percent overall.

Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten in League Play With 76-35 Win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO - The Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play with a 76-35 win at Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon. Calvin led 38-12 at halftime and never looked back. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik had 22 points and five rebounds while junior Courtney Kurncz and sophomore Ally Wolffis had eight points apiece. Sophomore Julia Hilbrands also came off the bench to provide six points and 12 rebounds. Calvin shot 49.2 percent overall and held a 51-25 rebounding advantage. Calvin returns to action on December 18 when it hosts Albion at 1 p.m.

Calvin 2nd in Latest Set of Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in second place, just 19 points behind first place Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin has a second place total of 327 points, holding a two-point lead over third place Middlebury (VT). Washington University (MO) leads the list with 336 points.

Carly Prins and Francesca Smith Receive All-Central Region Soccer Honors

2010 All-Central Region Women's Soccer Teams

Two members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors as named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and sponsored by Performance Subaru. Calvin senior forward Carly Prins has been named to the All-Central Region first team while sophomore midfielder Francesca Smith has been named to the All-Central Region third team. As a first team selection, Prins is now eligible for All-America consideration. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Prins is receiving All-Central Region first team honors for the second consecutive year. Smith is receiving all-region accolades for the first time.

The Calvin men’s and women’s soccer teams have both finished in the top 25 in final season national polls. The Calvin women’s team has been ranked 20th in the final d3soccer.com Top 25 poll. The Calvin men’s soccer team has been ranked seventh in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and sixth in the final d3soccer.com Top 25 poll. The Calvin men’s soccer team finished the year with a final record of 16-3-5 while the Calvin women’s soccer team finished with a final record of 15-3-2.
