THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end as the Knights were defeated by a determined Cal Lutheran squad 66-61 at the Posada Royale Holiday Classic Friday night. The host Regals (6-5) stretched their winning streak to five games in the process. Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Carissa Verkaik who notched her 17th collegiate double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ally Wolffis also had 17 points despite playing only 17 minutes because of foul trouble. Sophomore Kelsey Irwin also had nine points - all on three-point shots - while junior Courtney Kurncz had eight points and six boards. Verkaik and Wolffis were both named to the all-tournament team.

ELMHURST, IL - The Calvin men’s basketball team picked up a much-needed 75-57 victory over DePauw University Thursday night in the consolation game of the Elmhurst Bluejay Classic. The victory was also Calvin’s first over the Tigers and came 20 years after the only prior meeting between the two teams - an 82-79 DePauw victory over Calvin in the 1990 NCAA III Final Four. Senior Brad Schnyders finished the game with 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team. He was one of five Calvin players to notch double-digits in scoring as sophomore Bryan Powell, Snikkers and senior Danny Rodts had 14 points apiece with Rodts notching a double-double as he was credited with 10 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Brink had 13 points including a 3-for-4 showing from three-point range.

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The Calvin women’s basketball team opened its swing through Southern California with a 59-36 victory over Wesleyan (CT) Thursday afternoon at the Posada Royale Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran University. Calvin (9-2) used stifling first half defensive pressure to roll to the win as the Knights led 33-11 at halftime and limited Wesleyan to just 11 percent shooting in the first half. Calvin held a 45-34 rebounding advantage and limited the Cardinals to 21.4 percent field goal shooting overall. All 15 Calvin players received at least six minutes of playing time as the Knights substituted liberally throughout the second half. Sophomore Ally Wolffis led Calvin in scoring with 20 points to go with six rebounds while sophomore Julia Hilbrands had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik also had nine points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Calvin will face host Cal Lutheran Friday night at 7 p.m. (EST).

ELMHURST, IL - The Calvin men’s basketball team dropped a first round game of the Elmhurst Bluejay Classic Wednesday night, falling to Benedictine (IL) 82-79. Calvin will play in the consolation game Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. against DePauw. Calvin (4-6) trailed 41-39 at halftime before taking a brief 45-53 second half lead. Benedictine (6-4) regained the lead at 48-45 moments later however and never trailed again. Benedictine led by nine at 58-49 before Calvin rallied down the stretch. Calvin had a chance to tie but a three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark. Calvin was led in defeat by senior Brent Schuster with 18 points while senior Brad Schnyders had 16 points and sophomore Tom Snikkers and freshman Jordan Brink 12 points apiece. Benedictine was led by Cameron Snelling and Nate Green who collected 22 points apiece. Thursday’s consolation game will feature just the second meeting between Calvin and DePauw including the first since the two teams met in the 1990 NCAA III Final four.

Two members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-North/Central Region team. Named to the team from Calvin are seniors Ryan Bratt and Scott Hooker. The two players are the first members of the Calvin men’s soccer program to receive NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors. Both players also received ESPN Academic All-District IV honors earlier this fall.

The Calvin women’s basketball team has moved back into the top 25 of the d3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 24th in this week’s poll, released earlier this morning. Calvin has not been ranked in the top 25 poll since the second week of the regular season but have moved back in with a current five-game win streak that included a 73-65 conference win over Albion on December 18.

The 2010 Calvin men’s golf team is feature in the most recent issue of Michigan Golfer Magazine. The article, chronicling Calvin’s improbable comeback run for its first-ever MIAA title is written by Chris Lewis and can be found online at: Michigan Golfer Magazine . The story is found on pages 8-10. This past fall, the Calvin men’s golf team under the direction of head coach Brian Bolt captured its first-ever league title by overcoming a 19-stroke deficit on the final day of league competition, winning the conference crown by a mere two strokes over Trine University. As MIAA champions, the Knights will head to the NCAA III Championships next May 11-13 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through December 19. Verkaik, a sophomore from Holland (Holland Christian HS), narrowly missed a triple-double with 30 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots in 36 minutes of play Saturday as the Knights overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat Albion, 73-65, to maintain first place in the MIAA. She made 9 of 15 shots from the field, including two 3-point baskets, and 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. She also four steals and three assists in the game. Verkaik is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and fifth time in her career.
