Proceeds of Calvin/Davenport Hockey Series to Go To Van Andel Institute in Memory of Bill Wondergem

A two-game set between the Calvin and Davenport ice hockey teams this weekend will have special meaning. All ticket proceeds from the two games will be donated to the Van Andel Institute for cancer research in memory of former Calvin hockey player Bill Wondergem. A 2008 Calvin College graduate, Wondergem passed away unexpectedly last month at the age of 24. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and mother, Wondergem attended Calvin College, where he was a member of the Calvin College men’s hockey team and graduated in 2008 with honors in biology.

Men’s Soccer Receives Bid to NCAA III Tournament - Will Host Regional and Face ONU in First Round

The Calvin men’s soccer team has gained a bid to the NCAA III Tournament and will host a four-team regional this Friday and Saturday. Calvin (15-2-3) will host Ohio Northern (17-4-1) in a first round match on Friday at 1:30 p.m. (EST). with Dominican of Illinois (18-1-1) facing Thomas More of Kentucky (11-5-2) in Friday’s first first round game at 11 a.m. (EST). Calvin is making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament, its sixth under current head coach Chris Hughes and its 10th overall. Calvin is 8-8-3 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. The Knights received an at-large (Pool C) bid to the NCAA III Tournament. A year ago, Calvin advanced all the way to the national title game before falling to Messiah College (PA). Calvin will be facing Ohio Northern for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play but recently played the Polar Bears in 2008, winning 1-0. Ohio Northern is making its third straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament with the Polar Bears also advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2008.

Volleyball Receives Bid to NCAA III Tournament - To Face Otterbein in Regional Hosted by Wittenberg

The women’s volleyball team has received its 20th bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights were selected as an at-large (Pool C) selection earlier today and will travel to an eight-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Calvin (26-4) will face Otterbein (26-6) in a first round match on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The Calvin/Otterbein winner will advance to the second round Friday and will face the winner of a first round match between Heidelberg (32-5) and Greenville (26-5). Other first round matches have Hope (26-4) facing the University of Chicago (30-12) and Ohio Northern (19-12) facing host Wittenberg (30-2). In 19 prior trips to the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin has fashioned a won-loss record of 20-21 with one national runner-up finish and two fourth place finishes. Calvin will be facing Otterbein for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin will be making its seventh consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance - all under the watch of current head coach Amber Warners. Start times for Thursday’s first round matches will be announced later.

Women’s Soccer Headed to Ohio to Face Otterbein College in NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin women’s soccer team is headed to Ohio for NCAA III Tournament competition. The Knights will face host Otterbein College in a first round NCAA III Tournament game on Friday, November 12 at 11 a.m.. Located in the northern suburbs of Columbus, Ohio (Westerville), Otterbein (18-0-1) will host a four-team regional that will also include Allegheny (14-2-4) and Washington University of St. Louis (10-7-2). The Calvin/Otterbein winner will face the Allegheny/Wash. U. winner on Saturday, November 13. Calvin is making its sixth consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance under head coach Mark Recker and its eighth appearance overall. The Knights are 7-3-5 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play and advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2006 and 2009. Calvin will be making its second trip to Otterbein for NCAA III Tournament play as the Knights journeyed to Westerville for the 2005 tournament where it tied Ohio Wesleyan 2-2 before falling in a penalty kick shootout. Calvin and Otterbein will be facing each other for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play. However, the two teams met in an early September contest in 2009 with Calvin winning 3-0.

Rebecca Kamp Named MIAA MVP - Megan Rietema Named MIAA Freshman of The Year

The 2010 All-MIAA volleyball teams were announced at the conclusion of the MIAA Tournament Saturday afternoon and several Calvin players were honored. Junior Rebecca Kamp highlights the lead of Calvin honorees as she has been named the 2010 MIAA Most Valuable Player. She is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by younger sister Lizzie Kamp and freshman Megan Rietema. Rietema has also been named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, junior middle-blocker Renee DeHaan has been named to the All-MIAA second team.

Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meets at Wheaton

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split dual meets on Saturday as the Calvin men defeated the host Wheaton Thunder 149-144 while the Calvin women fell to Wheaton 156.5-136.5. The Calvin men are now 2-1 in dual meet action while the Calvin women are 1-2. In the men’s competition, Calvin junior Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori) had a monster day, winning the 100 freestyle (48.72), 200 freestyle (1:46.42) and 500 freestyle (4:57.17). On the women’s side, Calvin picked up wins in the pool from sophomore Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI) in the 200 freestyle (1:58.83), sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.18) and sophomore Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA) in the 200 IM (2:15.40). Freshman Elise Kauffman (Sugarland, TX) was also a winner on both the one and three-meter diving boards.

Volleyball Falls to Hope in Three Sets in MIAA Tournament Finals

HOLLAND - Calvin’s five-year run as MIAA Tournament champions came to an end on Saturday as the seventh-ranked Knights were defeated by sixth-ranked Hope in the MIAA Tournament finals Saturday afternoon 25-14, 25-17, 25-14. Prior to Saturday, Calvin had won five straight MIAA Tournament titles including a four-set win at Hope a year ago but on Saturday, the Flying Dutch turned the tables by limiting Calvin to an .082 hitting percentage while Hope hit at a blistering .340 clip. With the win, Hope (26-4) gains the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament while Calvin will await a possible at-large bid. The NCAA III Tournament field is expected to be announced Monday morning at 11 a.m. (EST) at: NCAA.com

Women’s Soccer Captures MIAA Tournament Title With 3-1 Win Over Alma - Punches Ticket to NCAAs

ALMA - The Calvin women’s soccer team punched its ticket to the NCAA III Tournament with a 3-1 victory at Alma Saturday afternoon in the MIAA Tournament championship game. With the win, Calvin gains the league’s automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA III Tournament with brackets set to be released on Monday morning. The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin’s third in five years. The Knights will be making their sixth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament—all under the watch of current head coach Mark Recker. The victory was also Calvin’s second in three years over Alma in the MIAA Tournament finals as the Knights defeated the Scots 3-0 in the 2008 finals. Calvin will learn its NCAA Tournament destination on Monday morning when the brackets are revealed at 9 a.m. (EST) at NCAA.com

Men’s Soccer Captures Share of MIAA Title With Victory Over Trine

On Senior Day and playing in their final conference match of the season Saturday, the Knights came out and defeated Trine 2-0 Saturday afternoon to claim a share of the MIAA title with Hope.  Scoring in the 7th minute to take the lead, and then adding an insurance goal with 10 minutes left in the match, Calvin ended its regular season with a bang and now will look for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The NCAA III Tournament bracket will be announced on Monday at 2 p.m. (EST) at: NCAA.com. Calvin (9-2-3 MIAA) shares the MIAA title with Hope (10-4-0 MIAA) which defeated Olivet 2-0 Saturday with each school finishing with 30 points in league play. Hope gains the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over Calvin.

Healthy Rebecca Kamp Helps Brings Calvin Volleyball back to Full Strength

HOLLAND -  As the fall weather continues to get colder and conference tournaments take place across the country, it becomes a lot more vital for a sports team to maintain a healthy roster.  After having dealt with some illness issues in the middle of its conference schedule, Calvin’s volleyball team is healthy once again as the Knights make their way through the end of the season MIAA Tournament. Ranked 7th in the nation, Calvin will play in Holland for the MIAA title Saturday against Hope after defeating Alma in the semifinals. One key player that is back after having missed a stretch of three weeks this season, junior Rebecca Kamp, now gives this team an added dimension as the Knights transition into tournament play.
