The first set of MIAA All-Sports standings have been released and Calvin holds first place in all three categories. Calvin leads the overall standings, known as the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with 90 points, four points ahead of Hope. In the men’s all-sports standings, Calvin is tied with Hope for first place with 41 points apiece while Calvin leads the women’s all-sports standings with 49 points to Hope’s 45 points.
Friday, November 19, 20102010 Women's Soccer ESPN Academic All-America Teams
Calvin College senior Elaine Schnabel has been named a first team ESPN Academic All-American in women’s soccer in the college division. Schnabel is the fourth individual in Calvin women’s soccer history to receive Academic All-America honors and the first individual to be named to the first team. Cara Jansen was a third a team selection in 1998 and a second team choice in 1999. A year ago, Calvin’s Allison Boender was a third team selection. The college division includes institutions at the NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA levels.

ST. LOUIS, MO - The Calvin College women’s volleyball team has succeeded on the court this season. They won a share of the MIAA conference championship for the first time since 2008. They have reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1992 with a stunning upset victory over 2nd ranked Wittenberg University at Wittenberg’s Pam Evan’s Smith Arena last week Saturday. The Knight’s have not only succeeded on the court this year. On Thursday afternoon, Calvin went to a crisis care nursery center in St. Louis to spend time with the kids there. The event was set up by the NCAA as part of its community service outreach program at NCAA Championship events. Later Thursday night, the team attended a championships banquet in downtown St. Louis where senior Kim Wigboldy and junior Erin Vander Plas gave a speech on behalf of the team.

For the second consecutive year, Calvin College junior Nick Kramer has been named the Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Kramer is receiving the award after racing to his second consecutive Great Lakes Regional individual title this past Saturday in Holland, Michigan. A native of Dyer, Indiana, and a graduate of Illiana Christian High School, Kramer helped the Calvin men’s cross country team capture its 15th consecutive Great Lakes Regional title as the Knights garnered a first place team score of 57 points. Two weeks prior, he helped Calvin capture its 24th consecutive MIAA title. In addition, Brian Diemer has been named the Great Lakes Regional Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Now in his fifth year as Calvin women’s cross country coach, Diemer is receiving the award for the third straight year. This fall, Diemer led the Calvin women’s cross country team to its sixth consecutive MIAA titles and its third straight Great Lakes Regional crown.

For the third consecutive year, Calvin College junior Rebecca Kamp has been named a first team Division III All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, and a graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Kamp is the first three-time AVCA All-American in Calvin history. In addition, Calvin freshman setter Megan Rietema has been named the AVCA’s Division III National Freshman of the Year, becoming the second individual in Calvin history to receive the honor. Rebecca Kamp also received the award in 2008. Joining Rietema on the AVCA Division III Honorable Mention All-America list is sophomore outside hitter Lizzie Kamp. She is receiving AVCA Division III Honorable Mention All-America honors for the second straight year.

CALEDONIA - For more than 35 minutes, a youthful Calvin men’s basketball team took the nationally-ranked Davenport Panthers to the limit. The Knights were unable to close however, dropping an 88-79 decision at 11th-ranked (NAIA D2) Davenport Tuesday night in the season opener for the Calvin men’s basketball team.Calvin led 37-32 at halftime behind 51.6 percent shooting from the floor. Davenport (5-0) clawed back to take a 51-50 lead with 12:57 left in the second half. Calvin answered with an 11-3 scoring run to build a 63-56 lead capped off by a layup by freshman Mitch Vallie (Goodrich HS) with 9:01 left to play. Davenport regained the lead at 70-69 with just over five minutes remaining however and never trailed again as the host Panthers outscored Calvin 17-8 over the final 4:42 to seal the win.

In its opening game of the 2010-11 season, Calvin defended its home court well against Manchester College as the Knights rolled to a 62-48 victory. An extremely young team that is returning only two starters from last year and having only two seniors on the roster, the Knights showed they do have some work to do in terms of gelling more as a team, but Calvin
played strong defensively and sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI) scored a team-leading 25 points to give the Knights their first win of the year.

Head Coach DeKleine, Coach Brooks and the members of the Calvin softball team would like to invite you to Calvin College for a high school preseason softball clinic January 22 at Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The clinic will focus on the fundamentals as well as more advanced skills used in the game of softball. Participants registering before Jan 14 will receive a clinic t-shirt . Day of registration/late registration cost will be $5.00 more and entries received after January 14 will not receive a t-shirt.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams are headed back to the NCAA III Championships. The Calvin men’s team will be making its 26th appearance at the NCAA III Championships which ranks fourth on the all-time NCAA III men’s cross country list. Under current head coach Brian Diemer, the men’s cross country team has posted 18 top-four national team finishes including national championship performances in 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2006. On the women’s side, Calvin will be making its 21st appearance at the NCAA III Championships which ranks third on the all-time NCAA III women’s cross country list.
