MILWAUKEE, WI - Calvin bounced back with a 65-40 victory over Heidelberg College in the consolation game of the Wisconsin-Lutheran Tipoff Tournament Saturday afternoon. Calvin led 44-16 at halftime and never looked back as the Knights shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the first half.

MILWAUKEE, WI - Calvin suffered its first defeat of the young season, falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater 60-54 in the opener of the Wisconsin-Lutheran Tipoff Tournament Friday evening. Calvin (1-1) will face Heidelberg College in the consolation game at 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday afternoon. Friday’s contest was a game of two different halves as Calvin led 34-21 at halftime only to see the Warhawks outscore the Knights 39-20 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Men’s Basketball Defeats Ohio Wesleyan 87-60 in Consolation Game of Calvin Tipoff Tournament

Calvin bounced back from a disappointing loss the night before to Grace Bible College with an 87-60 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University in the consolation game of its own Calvin Tipoff Tournament.
Calvin (1-2) shot 57.7 percent from the field in the first half en route to taking a 45-30 halftime lead. The Knights continued to roll in the second half, outscoring the Battling Bishops 42-30 to cruise to the double-digit win. Saturday’s contest was the first meeting between Calvin and Ohio Wesleyan since the 1991-92 season with Calvin know holding a 3-1 series lead.
Men’s Soccer Falls to UW-Oshkosh 1-0 in NCAA III Quarterfinals

OSHKOSH, WI - The Calvin men’s soccer season came to an end in the national quarterfinals Saturday night as the Knights fell 1-0 to the fifth-ranked Titans of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The host Titans (20-0-3) scored the only goal of the game on a free kick by Tim Stadler in the 61st minute of play. Stadler’s low hard kick from 25 yards out slipped past a wall of Calvin defenders and into the far corner of the net to give Oshkosh a 1-0 lead. Calvin came close to tying the match on a blast from the left wing by Scott Hooker with just over 10 minutes left but the shot sailed just over the far post.

Volleyball Advances to National Title Match With Thrilling Comeback Win Over Juniata in Semis

ST. LOUIS, MO - November 20, 2010 – No. 10 Calvin College erased a 2-0 deficit to come all the way back and defeat No. 3 Juniata College, 3-2 (14-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12) in the 2010 NCAA Division III volleyball semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Washington University Field House in St. Louis, Mo. Calvin (31-4) advances to the national championship for the second time in program history. Calvin also played in the 1986 finals, falling to UC-San Diego in five sets at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin will face No. 1 Emory University on MONDAY, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. (EST). Emory defeated host Washington University in four sets in Saturday’s second semifinal match. The Knights trailed Juniata 0-2 and were down 16-8 in the third set before mounting a comeback that permanently changed the complexion of the match.

WAVERLY, IA - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams claimed a pair of top 10 national finishes at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships on Saturday with the Calvin men finishing eighth with a team score of 277 points while the Calvin women finished ninth with 354 points. Junior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the Calvin men with a 16th place (24:41) individual finish to claim the first All-America berth of his Calvin cross country career. On the women’s side, Calvin just missed a pair of All-America (top 35) berths as junior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL) was 43rd (21:56) and sophomore Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 45th (21:56).
Men’s Soccer Advances to National Quarterfinals With Shootout Win Over Wisconsin-Whitewater

The Calvin men’s soccer team has moved on to the national quarterfinals. The Knights will face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a national quarterfinal contest Saturday night at 7 p.m. (EST). Calvin advanced to the quarterfinals by winning a penalty kick shootout against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 9-8 late Friday night. Calvin’s game against Whitewater concluded in a 1-1 double-overtime tie and later advanced into penalty kicks. Both teams connected on their first eight attempts but Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt was able to make a save on the ninth Whitewater penalty and Calvin junior Miles Cologo followed with the game-winner. Bratt is now 4-0 in penalty kick shootouts in his Calvin career. Calvin (16-2-5) fell behind 1-0 on a Whitewater goal in the 17th minute of play but the Knights equalized in the 26th minute on a goal by junior Tyler Vegter who was able to head in a cross from sophomore Mike Sanderson.

In their home-opener at the Van Noord Arena, the Knights fell to the Grace Bible College Tigers 64-63 in heartbreaking fashion. Ryan Krombeen’s got position in the paint, rolled a game-winning shot around the rim, and gave the Tigers a late lead with under ten seconds remaining. Calvin quickly inbounded the ball to junior Brad Schnyders, who charged down the sideline but was unable to get a shot off.
The basket came after the Knights surrendered a nine point lead with just under five minutes remaining.

St. Louis, Mo., November 19, 2010 – The No. 10 Calvin College Knights advanced to the NCAA Division III volleyball semifinals for the fourth time in school history with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-10, 17-25, 25-17) win over No. 24 University of Massachusetts Boston in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 19, at the Washington University Field House in St. Louis, Mo. The Knights will participate as a part of Division III volleyball’s Final Four for the first time since 1992, which was also the last time the championship was held at the Washington University Field House. Calvin will face No. 3 Juniata College in the national semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 3:30 p.m. Juniata swept No. 12 University of St. Thomas earlier on Friday.

Calvin Baseball Team Gives Back - Assisting at Congress Elementary School

The Calvin baseball team has been active in the offseason but the activity of the team this fall has been in volunteer work at Congress Elementary School - part of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Association. Myrna Anderson, a senior writer from Calvin’s office of Communications and Marketing caught up with the baseball team at Congress Elementary School and filed this report:
