The Calvin women’s soccer team battled Alma to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Tuesday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Calvin outshot the visiting Scots 26-7 but Alma (8-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 MIAA) got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 15th minute of play. Calvin answered with a goal by senior Elaine Schnabel in the 28th minute of play. Calvin continued to pepper the Alma goal throughout the remainder of the first half but could not come away with the go-ahead score. Scoring chances in the second half as well as overtime were few and far between for both teams. Calvin (8-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 MIAA) will host Adrian on Saturday at noon.

Calvin College junior middle blocker Renee DeHaan has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in volleyball. DeHaan, a junior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), had 13 kills for a hitting percentage of .481 in leading the first-place Knights to an MIAA victory over Kalamazoo. She added five blocks in the four-game match. DeHaan is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. DeHaan is averaging 2.06 kills-per-set along with a hitting percentage of .325 this year. She is also averaging 1.13 blocks-per-set. Ranked ninth nationally, Calvin (12-2 overall, 7-0 MIAA) returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Alma for a key MIAA match slated to start at 6:30 p.m.

CASCADE - The Calvin men’s golf team used home course advantage to its advantage by taking first place at an MIAA jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country Club Monday afternoon. Calvin posted a first place team score of 305 strokes led by the medalist performance of senior Eric Doezema who fired a one-under par round of 71. Calvin finished three strokes ahead of Trine on Monday. The Knights still trail Trine by 18 strokes heading into the final MIAA Jamboree - scheduled for this Saturday at Alma - but did move into sole possession of second place in the MIAA overall standings.
Calvin is now three strokes ahead of Hope in the overall standings and 12 strokes ahead of fourth place Adrian. Senior Jess Hendriksma also had a stellar afternoon for Calvin on Saturday, firing a round of 73 that left him tied for fourth place individually. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Dave Sarkipato with an 80, sophomore Ben Kuiper with an 81 and freshman David Veen with an 82.

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s golf team took seventh at an MIAA tournament hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club Saturday afternoon. Calvin finished with a team score of 396 strokes to inch closer to Alma in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights remain eighth in the overall league standings but are now 11 strokes behind Alma heading into the 36-hole MIAA Tournament next weekend in Battle Creek. Calvin was led on Saturday by sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who was tied for 11th individually with a round of 88 while sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was tied for 13th with a round of 89.

The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team battled Olivet to a 0-0 tie Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. The Knights outshot Olivet 15-9 but could not come up with a go-ahead goal. Olivet goalkeeper Ethan Felsing was stellar in nets, collecting eight saves including a pair of point blank stops on shots by Calvin’s Brad Heethuis early in the first half that appeared headed for the back of the net. Calvin (8-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAA) will travel to Alma next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.

KALAMAZOO - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team saw its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday as Kalamazoo College handed Calvin a 1-0 defeat. Kalamazoo stung the Knights early as Stephanie Verbeek ripped in a shot six minutes into the match. The goal was just the second allowed by the Calvin defense all year. Calvin then begin to mount pressure, outshooting the Hornets 8-4 in the first half including 7-1 over the final 25 minutes of the first half. Calvin continued to pressure in the second half but could not find the back of the net as Kalamazoo claimed the conference win. Calvin finished the game with a 14-7 shots at goal advantage and had nine corner kicks but Kalamazoo goalkeeper Courtney McCoy had seven saves. Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn had two saves for Calvin in defeat. Calvin (8-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAA) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 5 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams posted top-six finishes at the Notre Dame Invitational as the 11th-ranked women’s team took sixth in the women’s 5K Gold Division race with a team score of 170 points while the seventh-ranked men’s team took fourth in the men’s 8K Gold Division race.
