ALMA - There is a first time for everything. On Saturday, the time was right for the Calvin men’s golf team as it captured its first-ever MIAA title.
Trailing by 19 strokes heading into the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of the season, Calvin overcame the deficit to win the league crown by two strokes over Trine University. Calvin posted a team score of 296 at Saturday’s jamboree, hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club. Trine posted a team score of 317, 21 strokes behind Calvin, allowing the Knights to come-from-behind in dramatic fashion. Calvin finished the season with an eight-round total of 2411 strokes with Trine second at 2413. With the MIAA title, Calvin gains its first-ever bid to the NCAA III Championships, scheduled for May 10-13 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Guilford College will serve as host with the competition slated to be held at the Grandover Resort. Hendriksma also earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team, finishing with a season average of 74.5 strokes-per-round, the second-best single-season average in Calvin men’s golf history. Doezema earned a spot on the All-MIAA second team. Calvin finished the year by winning three of the MIAA Jamborees.

ROCHESTER - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams had solid performances at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday afternoon at Oakland University’s Katke Golf Course as both Calvin squads took first place in their respective small college divisions. The Michigan Intercollegiates includes teams from around the state of Michigan at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as NAIA institutions. On the men’s side, Calvin took first place in the small college division with 55 points. On the women’s side, Calvin took first place in the small college division with 34 points.

BATTLE CREEK - Led by a stellar one-two punch of sophomore Elise Doezema and freshman Carlia Canto, the Calvin women’s golf team is in sixth place through one day of competition at the 36-hole MIAA Tournament being held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin recorded a team score of 370 on Friday, good for sixth place through 18 holes of play. The Knights are just five strokes behind fourth place Adrian and Trine (365) at the tournament. Calvin also moved past Alma and into seventh place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights finished 25 strokes ahead of Alma on Friday and are now 14 strokes ahead of the Scots in the overall standings.

Ninth-ranked Calvin maintained its status as the MIAA’s top team Friday evening at the Van Noord Arena as the Knights defeated the Adrian Bulldogs in three sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-23), pushing their league record to a still-spotless 9-0, and 14-2 overall. Juniors Erin Vander Plas (Cadillac, MI) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids, MI) led the team with 12 and 11 kills respectively, with sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, MI) finishing with nine strong ones of her own. The Knights totaled seven service aces over the course of the three sets, as well as tallying eight blocks. Junior libero Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) led the team with 12 digs on the back line. Lizzie Kamp also notched 10 digs of her own. Freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI) dished out 37 assists and helped out on a number of the team’s blocks.

DEARBORN - The Calvin men’s golf team finished in a tie for third place in a field of six teams at the Red Poling Classic Thursday at the Dearborn TPC. Calvin finished with a team score of 321 strokes. Malone (OH) took first place with a team score of 296. Calvin was led by sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 77 while freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79, sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 82, junior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) and 83 and freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) an 88.
Calvin will now prepare for its season finale on Saturday when the Knights compete at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club at 1 p.m.
Thursday, October 07, 2010Commonwealth Games Hammer Throw Results
NEW DELHI, INDIA - Calvin College graduate Megann Rhode closed out competition at the Commonwealth Games Thursday morning with a seventh place finish in the hammer throw. Rhode’s best throw in the finals was a mark of 62.36 meters (204 feet, seven inches).
Rhode was one of three competitors from Canada in the finals. Rhode had the second-best finish of the three Canadian competitors. Her teammate Sultana Frizzel won the competition with a Commonwealth Games record throw of 68.57 meters (224 feet, 11 inches).

Women’s Basketball Ranked 19th in WDIII News Pre-Season Poll - Verkaik Named Pre-Season All-American

The Calvin women’s basketball team is ranked 19th in the pre-season Top 25 poll released by Women’s Division III News. A year ago, Calvin finished 24-5 overall and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights return 2010 MIAA MVP Carissa Verkaik who heads into her sophomore season. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has been named a pre-season All-American by Women’s Division III News. Verkaik averaged 18.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game during her freshman campaign. The Calvin women’s basketball team will open its season on November 16 when it hosts Manchester College at Van Noord Arena.

NEW DELHI, INDIA - Megann (VanderVliet) Rhode, a 2007 Calvin College graduate, has advanced to the finals of the hammer throw competition at the Commonwealth Games. Representing the Canadian track and field team, Rhode produced the fourth-best throw in the preliminaries of Wednesday’s hammer throw competition. A native of Oakville, Ontario, Rhode competed in the second flight of throwers. She fouled on her first two attempts but then uncorked a throw of 62.06 meters (203-7 feet) that was good for second place in her flight and fourth place overall through the prelims.Rhode will compete in the finals on Thursday at 8:20 a.m. (EST).

ALMA - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team moved into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with a 2-0 victory at Alma Saturday afternoon. Ranked 18th nationally in the Division III Coaches Poll and seventh in the d3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (9-1-1 overall) moved to 3-1-1 in the MIAA with the win, moving one point ahead of Adrian, Hope, Kalamazoo and Trine which are all just one point behind. Calvin is tied for first place with Olivet which defeated Trine 1-0 Wednesday. Olivet is also 3-1-1 in league play. In its win over Alma, Calvin scored a goal in each half. Freshman Zach Willis scored his fourth goal of the year on a play midway through the first half as he drilled a shot in from the 18. The clinching goal came late in the second half as junior Justin Ahearne redirected a shot into the net off a free kick by Dan Kmetz. The goal by Ahearne was his second of the year. Senior Ryan Bratt picked up the shutout victory for Calvin in goal - his eighth of the year and 11th of his career. Calvin will host Albion on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

ALMA - Calvin picked up an important 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory at Alma Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in league play at the midpoint of the MIAA double round-robin schedule. Ranked ninth nationally, Calvin improves to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in league play with the win. Calvin sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a stellar all-around match with 14 digs, 13 kills, two block assists, one block solo and an attack percentage of .500. Chipping in with six kills apiece were senior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) and juniors Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS). DeHaan also had five block assists. Calvin will now prepare for a busy weekend as the Knights host Adrian Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and travel to Trine on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
