Volleyball Falls to Hope In Three Sets at DeVos Fieldhouse

HOLLAND – Calvin’s seven-match win streak came to an end as did its sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights were defeated at rival Hope Wednesday night 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
Calvin and Hope are now tied for the MIAA lead with 10-1 conference records. Both teams came into the match nationally-ranked with Calvin ranked ninth and Hope ranked 12th.

Using the momentum of playing in front of more than 2,000 fans, Hope grabbed a quick 6-1 lead in set one and used an 8-3 run midway through the set to grab an early one-set lead. Calvin led in sets two and three but could not survive Hope comeback bids.

Women’s Soccer Comes From Behind To Top Trine 3-1

After winning big this past weekend by a score of 6-0, Calvin struggled early but held on for a victory Wednesday afternoon as the Knights were able to defeat Trine 3-1.  After a scoreless first half the Thunder jumped on top with a goal, but Calvin managed to retaliate with three of its own to claim the win.

Goals for Calvin came from sophomore Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN), freshman Paige Rindells (Bloomington, MN), and sophomore Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville, MI).

Men’s Soccer Ties Trine 1-1 - Falls Out of First Place in MIAA Standings

ANGOLA, IN - The see-saw MIAA men’s soccer race took another twist on Tuesday as Calvin tied Trine 1-1 Tuesday afternoon. The tie drops Calvin out of sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings and into second place, two points behind Kalamazoo (5-2-0 MIAA) which defeated Albion 3-0 on Tuesday. Calvin (4-1-2 MIAA) holds a one-point lead over third place Adrian, Olivet and Trine which are all 4-2-1 on the year. Calvin got on the board in the 54th minute on a goal by senior Lucas Wilgenburg on shot off a corner kick play. Trine came back to tie the game five minutes later however and neither team would score again. Calvin finished with a 16-15 shots at goal advantage. Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt had five saves for Calvin in the contest.

Lizzie Kamp Named MIAA Player of the Week in Volleyball

For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin College sophomore Lizzie Kamp has been named MIAA Player of the Week in volleyball. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) had 32 kills for a hitting percentage of .411 for the week as Calvin won three straight matches to maintain its hold on first place in the MIAA. In a key road matchup against Alma, Kamp had 13 kills and no errors in 26 attack attempts for a .500 hitting percentage, and added 14 digs and three blocks to lead the Knights to a sweep of the Scots.

Justin Ahearne Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

For the first time in his career, Calvin College junior Justin Ahearne has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer. Ahearne, a junior from Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) had a dominating week on both offense and defense in leading Calvin to a pair of victories that propelled the Knights into first place in the MIAA race. He had one goal in a 2-0 victory over Alma, then in a Saturday game against Albion, he scored three goals in the game’s first 13 minutes as the Knights were victorious 7-0. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Trine for a key conference match slated to start at 4 p.m. Calvin is currently 10-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play, one point ahead of second place Adrian, Kalamazoo and Trine.

Carly Prins Named MIAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

For the first time in her career, Calvin College senior Carly Prins has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s soccer. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Prins scored three goals, the second hat trick by a player in an MIAA game this season, as the Knights rolled to a 6-0 victory over Adrian Saturday. On the year, Prins is leading Calvin in scoring with 11 points on the strength of five goals and one assist. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Trine at 4 p.m. in a conference match. Calvin is currently 9-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.

Women’s Golf Sixth at MIAA Tournament - Doezema Sets Calvin Single-Season Scoring Record

BATTLE CREEK - Calvin followed a first day team score of 370 strokes at the MIAA Tournament with a second day total of 363 strokes. The tournament was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. The 363 score is a season-best. Calvin’s two-day, 36-hole round score of 773 strokes was good for sixth place at the MIAA Tournament and allowed the Knights to finish in seventh place in the final MIAA overall standings. Calvin finished just four strokes behind Adrian in the tournament standings.

Sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a stellar tournament, firing back-to-back rounds of 81 that allowed her to finish tied for fourth place at the tournament. For her efforts (81-81=162), Doezema earned a spot on the all-tournament team

Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Play With Win Over Trine

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin remained unbeaten in MIAA play with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Ranked ninth nationally, the Knights are now 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA heading into a showdown at rival Hope next Wednesday.

Sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 10 kills and seven digs. Juniors Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six kills apiece. VanderPlas had two block assists and two block solos while DeHaan had one block solo and five block assists.

Men’s Soccer Rolls to 7-0 Win Over Albion - Takes Sole Possession of First Place in MIAA Standings

On a beautiful sunny day at Calvin’s Zuidema Field the nationally-ranked Knights scored seven goals en route to their 10th victory of the season.

Calvin wasted no time in taking control, scoring four goals in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville, MI) scored a hat-trick in those first fifteen minutes of the game, all on the receiving end of Calvin set pieces from senior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH). Aside from Ahearne’s early hat trick, Calvin goals came from senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison, MI) in the 9thh minute, junior Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville, MI) in the 49th minute, sophomore Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville, MI) in the 57th minute, and sophomore Chris Nance (Washington, MI) in the 60th minute.

Women’s Soccer Breaks Loose for 6-0 Win Over Adrian

After struggling to score in recent games, the Knights responded with a 6-0 victory over Adrian on Saturday.

The Knights opened the game with intensity, peppering the net with shots in the first three minutes.  Then Carly Prins scored on an unassisted effort, putting the Knights on the board less than two and a half minutes into the game.  Prins would go on to record her first collegiate hat-trick, scoring a goal with three seconds left in the first half and another in the second half. Also scoring for the Knights were freshmen Brittany Hieftje and Paige Rindels and senior Kellie Honderd.
