Men’s Soccer Postponed At Olivet - To Play Wednesday as Part of Men’s/Women’s Doubleheader

The Calvin men’s soccer team’s game at Olivet on Tuesday was postponed because of weather conditions including a tornado warning that was in affect for the Calvin campus late Tuesday morning. The contest will be made up Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Olivet and will be part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader as the Calvin women will face host Olivet at 4 p.m.

Volleyball Rolls to Win Over Olivet - Remains Tied for MIAA Lead

The ninth-ranked Calvin volleyball team improved to 23-3 overall and 13-1 in the MIAA with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-14 win over visiting Olivet Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin treated a festive homecoming weekend crowd to an impressive performance as the Knights hit a blistering .374 on the floor.Calvin remains tied with Hope for the league lead with one week of league play left on the schedule. Calvin will host Kalamazoo next Friday and Alma the following afternoon to close out its MIAA regular season campaign.

After a disappointing loss to Hope on Wednesday, the Knights responded with a critical 3-0 victory over MIAA leading Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The Knights remain third in the tightly packed MIAA race, just two points behind league-leading Adrian and one point back of second place Olivet. Calvin travels to Olivet on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest.

Although it was an unscored meet, the Knights got their 2010-11 season underway Saturday afternoon and saw good results in the Calvin-hosted MIAA Relays. The Knights swam well on both the men and women’s sides, and the meet proved to be a good survey of where most teams in the conference are at this point in the long season. The next meet for the Knights will be another home meet next week Friday as Calvin hosts Grand Valley.

Albion, MI- Calvin used a pair of first half goals to record a 2-0 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. The Knights extended their win streak to four games with the win and remain three points behind league-leading Alma with just one regular season conference game left to play. Calvin will travel to Olivet next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the MIAA Tournament slated to start October 30 with the top two seeds receiving first round byes.

ALBION, MI - The Calvin College Knights Women’s Volleyball Team came to Albion College looking to keep but a single blemish on their conference record for the season. The Albion Britons put up little resistance as Calvin defeated them in straight sets 25-17, 25-10, 25-9 in a match that lasted only 51 minutes. The win improves Calvin to 21-3 on the year, 12-1 in the MIAA. Calvin returns to action Saturday when it faces the Olivet Comets at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.

The first set of NCAA III fall sports regional rankings have been released and three Calvin teams are ranked. In men’s soccer, Calvin is ranked second in the Central Region. In women’s soccer, Calvin is ranked fifth in the Central Region. In volleyball, Calvin is ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region. The regional polls are used by the respective regional committees as guides for selection to the NCAA III Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season of each respective sport.

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team will be seeking its seventh straight MIAA title this winter. The Knights have won nine of the last 11 MIAA crowns.
The Knights return 18 letterwinners including three that earned All-MIAA honors in 2010. Returning All-MIAA selections include senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS), junior Rachel Bos (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Elizabeth Counsel (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS). The MIAA Championships will be held at nearby Jenison High School February 17-19. The NCAA III Championships will take place March 23-26 at the University of Tennessee

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team continues to build momentum. Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights will feature a roster of 21 athletes this year including three divers. A year ago, Calvin finished fourth in the final MIAA standings, placing fourth at the MIAA Championships with 428 points, 65 points behind third place Olivet.
The Knights return 11 letterwinners led by sophomore Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS). Rushlow was an All-MIAA selection as a freshman last year and also qualified for the NCAA III Championships in the 100 butterfly. Rushlow had a standout MIAA Championship meet, placing third in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in the 50 freestyle.

For the second time this season the Flying Dutch of Hope stunned Calvin with late game heroics as the Knights fell at home 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in another intense rivalry match. Calvin would score early on in the game and take the lead into the second half, but Hope rallied with two goals to defeat the Knights again for the third straight contest between the two rivals. Calvin remains three points behind league-leading Kalamazoo with the Knights scheduled to host the Hornets (18 points) on Saturday. Calvin drops into a fourth place tie with Hope however (15 points) as Adrian is second (17 points) and Olivet (16 points) third in the league standings.
