Swimming and Diving Teams Record Dual Meet Victories at Alma

ALMA - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up MIAA dual meet victories at Alma Saturday afternoon with the men defeating the host Scots 149-84 while the Calvin women’s team defeated Alma 150-66.

Both Calvin teams are now 1-1 in dual meet action this year. Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday, traveling to Wheaton (IL) for non-conference dual meets.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Capture MIAA Titles

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up MIAA titles on Saturday as both teams took first place at the MIAA Championships at Calvin’s Gainey Athletic Complex. On the men’s side, fourth-ranked Calvin cruised to a first place score of 19 points, placing five runners in the top seven. On the women’s side, eighth-ranked Calvin won a thriller, edging 14th-ranked Hope 31-33. The margin is believed to be the closest at a championship meet in MIAA women’s cross country history. The Calvin men have now won 24 consecutive MIAA titles - the second-longest active championship streak in MIAA athletics history. Calvin women have now won six consecutive MIAA titles including 22 in the last 23 years. -

Volleyball Captures Share of MIAA Regular Season Title With Win Over Alma

In their final regular season game, the Knights rattled off another three set victory against Alma on Saturday.  Ranked seventh nationally, Calvin (24-3 overall, 15-1 MIAA) won 25-17, 25-14, and 25-20, showing off some impressive front and back row defense. With the win, Calvin clinched a share of the final MIAA regular season title – Calvin’s first since 2007 and its 17th overall which leads all MIAA institutions. Calvin shares the final league crown with Hope which defeated St. Mary’s on Saturday to also finish 15-1 in league play.Calvin will hold the second seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament as Hope holds the tiebreaker edge over the Knights by virtue of defeating Calvin in three sets earlier this year while Calvin’s win over Hope was in four sets. Calvin will host Adrian in a first round MIAA Tournament match Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Remains Tied for MIAA Lead With 2-0 Win Over Alma

Calvin kept its hopes of an MIAA crown alive with a 2-0 win over Alma on Saturday. With the win, Calvin remains tied for the MIAA lead with Hope with 24 points, one point ahead of Adrian (23 points) and two points ahead of Olivet (22 points). Alma, the last place team in the MIAA, came out aggressively in the opening minutes, but Calvin soon settled down and took control of the game. Sophomore Joe Broekhuizen scored late in the first half and senior Scott Hooker providing the clinching goal, converting a penalty kick in the closing minutes. Ryan Bratt posted his 11th shutout victory.

Swimming & Diving Teams Open Dual Meet Seasons Against Grand Valley State

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in action Friday night, hosting Grand Valley State in a non-conference dual meet. The visiting Lakers came out on top in both competitions, winning the men’s meet 144-86 and the women’s meet 166-72. The Knights are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Alma for 1 p.m. dual meets.

Volleyball Moves Back Into First Place Tie in MIAA Standings With 3-0 Win Over Kalamazoo

The Knights continued to roll in the MIAA, with another three set victory over Kalamazoo on Friday night.

In the first set, Calvin couldn’t pull ahead of the Hornets, and even trailed for much of the early portions of the set.  Kalamazoo went up 16-15 before Coach Amber Warners called a timeout to collect her team.  The Knights rattled off four consecutive points and took what looked to be a commanding lead, but Kalamazoo came back to tie the game at 20.  Calvin then opened a lead and finished the set with a 25-21 victory. Calvin then picked up a 25-14 win in set two and a clinching 25-17 win in set three. The Knights are now 14-1 in league play and once again, tied for the MIAA lead with Hope. Calvin will host Alma on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale for both teams.

Latest Set of NCAA III Fall Sports Regional Rankings Released

The latest set of NCAA III Fall Sports Regional rankings have been released.

In men’s soccer, Calvin is ranked third in the Central Region, down one spot from a week ago. In women’s soccer, Calvin remains ranked fifth in the Central Region. In volleyball, Calvin is ranked third in the Great Lakes Region.

The regional rankings are used as a guide for the NCAA III selection committee when announcing the NCAA III Tournament fields November 7 and 8.

Calvin Women’s Soccer Secures Second Seed for MIAA Tournament With 4-0 Win at Olivet

OLIVET - Calvin secured the second seed and a first round bye for the upcoming MIAA Tournament with a 4-0 win at Olivet Wednesday afternoon. Calvin (13-2-2 overall, 6-1-1 MIAA) finishes second in the final MIAA regular season standings, ending Calvin’s run of five straight MIAA regular season titles. Alma (7-0-1 MIAA) captured the crown with a 3-0 win over Albion on Wednesday. Calvin will host a semifinal game next Tuesday, November 2, against the winner of a Saturday first round game between (#6) Albion and (#3) Kalamazoo. In Calvin’s victory over Olivet, the Knights raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Senior Carly Prins scored a pair of goals off assists from senior Lauren Heyboer. Also scoring goals for Calvin were senior Kellie Honderd and freshman Danielle Carter. Wednesday’s win was Calvin’s first on the road this year against a team with a winning record.

Late Goal by Scott Hooker Lifts Men’s Soccer To 1-0 Win at Olivet - Knights Now Tied for First

OLIVET, MI - A goal by Calvin senior Scott Hooker with just 2:12 left in regulation lifted the Calvin men’s soccer team to a crucial 1-0 victory at Olivet Wednesday afternoon. The Knights are now tied with Hope for the MIAA lead with three conference games left to play. Hooker’s goal - his second of the year - came off a set piece from the 20-yard line with sophomore Joe Broekhuizen finding Hooker with a short pass and Hooker responding with a blast into the top shelf of the goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Calvin (12-2-3 overall, 6-2-3 MIAA) held a 20-7 shots at goal advantage. Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt came up with three saves for the Knights in gaining his 10th shutout victory of the season. Calvin will host Alma on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Volleyball Moves Up To Seventh in National Rankings

AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll (10-26-10)

The Calvin women’s volleyball team has moved up two spots in the latest set of Top 25 rankings released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Knights share the number-seven spot in this week’s poll with Hope. Calvin had been ranked ninth the previous five weeks.

Calvin and Hope are currently tied atop the MIAA standings with 13-1 conference records. Calvin closes out its MIAA regular season schedule this weekend, hosting Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. Friday night and Alma on Saturday at 1 p.m.
