Men’s Soccer Continues To Hold Number-One Ranking in NSCAA Division III Poll

For the second consecutive week, the Calvin men’s soccer team is ranked number-one in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll. Calvin is currently 4-0 on the year and coming off weekend victories at Wheaton (IL) and North Central (IL). The Knights return to action Wednesday night, traveling to Carthage College (WI) for a 7 p.m. (EST) contest. The game will be (audio) broadcast on the Calvin website with sports information student assistant Nate Triezenberg calling all of the action at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/calvin.portal

Women’s Volleyball Team Moves Up To Fourth in National Rankings

The Calvin women’s volleyball team has moved up four spot in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked fourth in this week’s poll, up four spots from a week ago when the Knights were ranked eighth.

Calvin is currently 6-0 on the year and returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Saint Mary’s in a 7 p.m. MIAA match. On Friday and Saturday, Calvin will compete at the Wittenberg Border Battle. At the tournament, Calvin will face fifth-ranked Wittenberg, 12th-ranked Ohio Northern, 19th-ranked Heidelberg and the College of Mount St. Joseph.

Women’s Golf Eighth at MIAA Jamboree #2

CASCADE - The Calvin women’s golf team placed eighth at at an MIAA jamboree on Tuesday at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club with a team score of 419 strokes. Calvin served as host of the jamboree which was the second of the year in league competition.

Calvin’s top individual was sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 96 followed by freshman Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee/Manistee HS) with a 104. Freshman Melissa Shepard (Lowell/Lowell HS) was next with a 106 while sophomore Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had a 113.

Women’s Soccer Edges University of Chicago 1-0 - Moves Back Into National Rankings

For the first time since 2006, Calvin emerged victorious Tuesday afternoon over the University of Chicago, as the Knights outlasted the Maroons 1-0 in a match that went right down to the final seconds of regulation.  Freshman winger Brittany Hieftje (Holland, MI) scored the lone goal of the match, her third of the year, in the 30th minute of play.  Calvin keeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron, MI), another freshman, recorded her 6th shutout of the year while also tallying 8 saves against the Maroons. Ranked 20th in the most recent set of Division III Top 25 rankings released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Calvin is now 6-1-0 on the year.

Top-Ranked Men’s Soccer Team Defeats North Central 3-0

NAPERVILLE, IL - One night after defeating rival Wheaton 3-2, Calvin traveled across I-88 to face North Central College. Calvin kept up its winning ways against the Cardinals, handing the redbirds a 3-0 defeat. Ranked number-one in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin (4-0-0) scored all three of its goals in the first half. Senior Kurt Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS) put Calvin on the board in the 33rd minute of play, ripping in a shot off a set piece as senior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville HS) tapped the ball to Van Sickel on a free kick who followed with a rocket into the back of the net for his second goal of the year.

Women’s Golf 6th at MIAA Tournament #1 - Canto & Doezema Tie for 2nd Place Individually

ALMA - Calvin opened MIAA competition with a solid team score of 366 strokes at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club. The team score was good for sixth place but was just one stroke out of fifth place and just nine strokes out of fourth. Sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led the way with rounds of 83 that left them in a six-way tie for second place individually.

Women’s Soccer Defeats Wheaton 1-0 For First Win Over Thunder Since 1998

Calvin snapped a six-game losing streak against non-conference rival Wheaton (IL) Saturday afternoon, defeating the Thunder 1-0 at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. The victory is Calvin’s first against Wheaton in women’s soccer since a 1-0 win in 1998 at Calvin. The victory was also the first for Calvin head coach Mark Recker against Wheaton (4-1-0) which came into Saturday’s game ranked 14th in the latest NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll.

Sophomore Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South HS) provided the only scoring of the game as she ripped a left-footed shot from the 20-yard line into the far corner of the net just over seven minutes into the second half. Smith’s blast was set up by a nifty lead pass from senior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) who drew an assist on the play.

Calvin Captures Round One vs Hope in Early Clash of Nationally-Ranked Teams

In another edition of one of the fiercest volleyball rivalries in Division III of the NCAA featuring two teams ranked in the top ten, the Knights of Calvin College (#8) faced off Saturday afternoon at home against the Flying Dutch of Hope College (#4).  Both teams sitting on perfect 5-0 overall records, and also both 2-0 in league play thus far, expectations were high and the competitive play surely did not disappoint.

Calvin defeated the Flying Dutch 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, coming from behind to gain wins in two of the first three sets.

Top-Ranked Calvin Holds Off 18th-Ranked Wheaton 3-2

WHEATON, IL - The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team survived a wild shootout at rival Wheaton in front of a standing room only crowd, topping the host Thunder by a 3-2 score. Calvin used first half goals from senior Kurt Van Sickel and freshman Zach Willis to build a 2-0 halftime lead but 18th-ranked Wheaton came roaring back with a pair of second half goals. A score by Calvin senior Kyle Billin proved to the difference however as the Knights picked up their third straight win over Wheaton including their second-ever win at Wheaton’s Joe Bean Stadium.

Women’s Volleyball Rolls to Win Over Trine Thunder - Prepares For Showdown With Hope

In their MIAA home opener, the eighth-ranked Calvin Knights served themselves a three-set victory over conference opponent Trine University on Friday night. 

Strong serving and sound fundamental play led the Knights to a quick win.  Ranked eighth nationally, Calvin will now prepare to host rival and fourth-ranked Hope on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin is now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
