Lucas Wilgenburg Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

For the third time in his career, Calvin College senior Lucas Wilgenburg has been named the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer. Wilgenburg, a senior from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS), anchored a tough Calvin defense as the Knights posted shutout wins over Carthage, Wis., 2-0, and Hiram, Ohio, 3-0, to improve to 6-0. A defensive back, Wilgenburg has been a part of a Calvin team that has outscored the opposition 15-2 through six games this fall. The Knights are currently the top-ranked team in Division III men’s soccer. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Women’s Soccer Battles Augustana to 0-0 Tie in Meeting of Nationally-Ranked Teams

ROCK ISLAND, IL – In a rematch of a national semi-quarterfinal NCAA III Tournament game from a year ago, Calvin and Augustana (IL) battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie. Both teams came into the contest nationally-ranked as host Augustana was ranked 10th in the most recent Division III Coaches Top 25 poll while Calvin came in ranked 20th in the same poll.

Volleyball Posts 2-2 Record at Wittenberg Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD, OH – Calvin posted a 2-2 weekend record at the Wittenberg University Border Battle. The fourth-ranked Knights opened play on Friday with back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked Heidelberg and Wittenberg but came back to defeat nationally-ranked Ohio Northern Saturday morning and also the College of Mount St. Joseph Saturday afternoon.

Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and freshman Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were all named to the Michigan All-Tournament Team.

Men’s Golf Takes Third at MIAA Jamboree - Moves Into Second in Overall MIAA Standings

ANGOLA, IN – Calvin moved into sole possession of second place in the overall MIAA standings with a third place finish at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Trine University Saturday afternoon at the Zollner Golf Club.

Calvin posted a third place team score of 294 strokes with host Trine winning with a score of 275 and Adrian placing second with a score of 286. Hope was a stroke behind Calvin with a team score of 295.

Trine now holds a 27-stroke lead over Calvin for first place in the overall MIAA standings through three league outings. Calvin is three strokes ahead of Olivet and five strokes ahead of Hope.

Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Hiram 3-0 - Ups Season Record to 6-0

HIRAM, OH – The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory at Hiram College Saturday afternoon. Playing nearby his hometown of Strongsville, Ohio, Calvin College senior Dan Kmetz enjoyed a happy homecoming by scoring the game-winning goal in the 34th minute of play, ripping in a 30-yard blast that knuckled over the Hiram goalkeeper and just under the crossbar.

Calvin (6-0-0) then received late second half goals from senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) and Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) to put the game away.

Men’s Cross Country Team Captures Knight Invite Title - Kramer Takes Individual Crown

The rain held off just long enough in Grand Rapids Saturday for the men and women of Calvin’s cross country teams to compete in the annual Knight Invitational held on Calvin’s campus.  After the women ran their way to an outright victory in the first race, the men followed suit in the season’s debut race as the Knights placed five runners in the top ten, winning with a score of 31 points.

Calvin junior Nick Kramer won the 8K race in a time of 25:14.5, a solid fourteen seconds ahead of the second-place runner.  Calvin’s other four top-ten finishers were 5th place senior Ben Van Wyk (25:40.8), 6th place junior Dan Kerr (25:44.5), 9th place junior Alex Wrobel (25:52.4), and 10th place sophomore Rhett Morici (26:06.9).

Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team Captures Calvin Knight Invite Title

The Calvin women’s cross country team took an important step forward in its season debut Saturday morning at the Calvin Knight Invitational. Ranked 15th in the most recent Division III National poll, Calvin took six of the top 13 spots to take first place with a team score of 39 points, 30 points ahead of 14th-ranked Ohio Northern.  Strong pack running fueled Calvin’s first place performance as the back pack of Calvin’s top six finished within four seconds of each other. Junior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was Calvin’s top finisher with a fourth place time of 18:26 with senior Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) fifth (18:33) and sophomore Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) seventh.

Men’s Soccer Claims 2-0 Win on Road at Carthage

KENOSHA, WI – The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team used a pair of second half goals to record a 2-0 victory at Carthage College Wednesday night. The Knights are now 5-0 on the year heading into their final non-conference game – a 3 p.m. tilt at Hiram College (OH) on Saturday.

Calvin held off an upset-minded Carthage team that had handed nationally-ranked Loras College a 2-1 defeat a week before behind a penalty kick by senior Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 59th minute of play and a scramble goal by senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) with exactly five minutes left to play.

Volleyball Remains Unbeaten After Three-Set Win Over Saint Mary’s

Fresh from knocking off rival Hope College in a four set match this past weekend, the now 4th ranked Knights of Calvin College continued on track Tuesday evening as they defeated the Saint Mary’s Belles in three straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-18).

After defeating the Dutchmen on Saturday, Calvin moved up four spots to its present #4 ranking in the national poll with Hope dropping to 6th.  Tuesday’s three set sweep of the Belles maintained a spotless record thus far for the Knights’ 2010 campaign as Calvin improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Men’s Golf Takes First Place at MIAA Jamboree #2 - Ben Kuiper Earns Medalist Honors

MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team took first place at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon, posting a team score of 303 strokes. The jamboree was the second of the year on the league schedule.

Calvin finished four strokes ahead of runner-up Trine and seven strokes ahead of third place Hope. After two league jamborees, Calvin is now in third place in the overall MIAA standings with 609 strokes, one stroke behind Olivet (608) and seven strokes behind league-leading Trine (602).  Hope is in fourth place with 613 strokes overall.
