Women’s Cross Country Team Takes First Place at MIAA Jamboree With Score of 21 Points

OLIVET - Score round one for the Knights of Calvin College. In a showdown of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin captured first place at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Olivet College at the Olivet Golf Course with a team score of 21 points. Ranked 13th nationally, Calvin finished 13 points ahead of 10th-ranked Hope by placing five runners in the top seven spots. Junior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led the way for the Knights with a first place time of 22:25 on the 6K course with senior Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) finishing second in 22:41. Hope took the next two spots but Calvin took the next three as junior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was fifth (23:07), sophomore Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) sixth (23:09) and senior Samantha Westveer (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) seventh (23:10).

Men’s Cross Country Rolls To First Place Score of 17 Points at MIAA Jamboree

OLIVET - The seventh-ranked Calvin men’s cross country team finished just two points shy of a perfect score in rolling to a first place performance at at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Olivet Saturday morning at the Olivet Golf Course. Calvin posted a first place team score of 17 points, finishing 51 points ahead of Albion and Hope which finished tied for second place with 68 points apiece. The MIAA jamboree is worth one-third of the final MIAA title with the remaining two-thirds coming at the MIAA Championships. Calvin will host the MIAA Championships on October 30 at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

Volleyball Teams Picks Up Road Win at Olivet - Remains on Top of MIAA Standings

OLIVET - The ninth-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 victory at Olivet Friday evening. The host Comets (6-4 overall, 3-2 MIAA) jumped out to a 19-16 lead in set one but the Knights rallied to score nine of the next 12 points to gain the set one win and take the momentum throughout the remainder of the match.
Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a huge match with 17 kills, a hitting percentage of .600 and seven block assists. She was also credited with a pair of service aces and a pair of digs.

Women’s Golf 10th Through Day One of Olivet Fall Invitational

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team is in 10th place after day one of the Olivet Fall Invitational. Olivet is hosting the tournament at the Medalist Golf Club. Calvin produced a first day team score of 404 strokes. Sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had Calvin’s top score on Friday with a round of 89 that has her tied for 16th place. Sophomore Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had a collegiate-best round of 99. Freshmen Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee, MI/Manistee HS) and Melissa Shepard (Lowell, MI/Lowell HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers with rounds of 108.

Men’s Soccer Team Opens MIAA Campaign With 2-0 Victory Over Adrian

As conference play gets underway, the top-ranked Knights of Calvin got down to business Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Bulldogs of Adrian by a score of 2-0.  Calvin completely had the bulk of the offensive firepower throughout the game, amassing a 28-5 shot advantage, with 10 of those shots being on net.  Goals for Calvin were scored by sophomore Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids, MI) and junior Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville, MI) as the Knights rolled to their seventh straight victory of the season and first win in MIAA play.Senior Ryan Bratt pitched another shutout in goal for Calvin, recording three saves. Calvin (7-0-0 overall) returns to action on Saturday, traveling to rival Hope for a 7 p.m. game at Van Andel Stadium.

Volleyball Rolls to Win Over Albion - Remains Unbeaten in League Play

Calvin remained perfect in conference play, defeating Albion College in three sets (25-6, 25-13, 25-16) Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena.  Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL) led the Knights at the net with 13 kills in 20 attempts, and adding 6 block assists.  With the win, the Knights improved their record to 5-0 in the MIAA standings and 10-2 overall. Calvin is ranked ninth in the most recent AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Olivet for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.

Women’ s Soccer Moves Up to 15th In NSCAA Division III Top 25 Rankings

The Calvin women’s soccer team have moved up five spots in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 15th after being ranked 20th a week ago. Calvin is currently 6-1-1 overall and will carry a six-match unbeaten streak into a Saturday contest at Ohio Wesleyan slated to start at 3 p.m. A week ago, Calvin defeated non-conference rival Chicago 1-0 and then fought 10th-ranked Augustana (IL) to a 0-0 double-overtime time Saturday night in Rock Island, Illinois.

Men’s Soccer Continues to Hold Top Spot in NSCAA Division III Top 25 Poll

The Calvin men’s soccer team continues to hold the top spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked number-one in this week’s poll that was released earlier this afternoon. Calvin (6-0-0) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. On Saturday night, Calvin will journey to rival Hope for a contest slated to start at 7 p.m. at Hope’s Van Andel Stadium.

Men’s Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Tournament - Gains Six Strokes on League Leader in Overall Standings

KALAMAZOO - The Calvin men’s golf team inched closer to league-leading Trine University despite finishing fourth at an MIAA tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Milham Park Golf Club. Calvin took fourth at the tournament with a team score of 301 strokes on Tuesday. The Knights are now tied for second place with Olivet and just one stroke ahead of fourth place Hope in the overall standings. The Knights made up six strokes on the league-leading Thunder of Trine however as Trine placed seventh on Tuesday with a team score of 307. Calvin trails Trine by 20 strokes in the overall standings.

Rebecca Kamp & Megan Rietema Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors in Volleyball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle hitter Rebecca Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin setter Megan Rietema its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through September 19. Kamp, a junior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 88 kills for a .448 hitting percentage in five matches, three of them against nationally-ranked opponents. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and sixth time in her career. Rietema, a freshman from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), dished out 209 assists (11.0 per game) in five matches for the week, and added 32 digs and 12 blocks. Rietema is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and in her career. Calvin returns to action this week when it hosts Albion Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.
