Kelby McClelland Balances Full Plate at Calvin - Headed Back to NCAA III Track & Field Championships

The Calvin Sports Information office caught up on Monday afternoon with Calvin senior Kelby McClelland who is headed back to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships for the first time since the 2007 season. A native of Mercer, Pennsylvania, McClelland will compete in the 110 high hurdles this week at the national meet hosted by Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio. McClelland also competed at the national meet in the 110 high hurdles in 2007 but then elected to take two years off from school. This fall, he chose to return to Calvin to complete his degree and finish out his final year of track and field eligibility.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Sending 16 to NCAA III Track & Field Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 16 athletes to the upcoming NCAA III Track and Field Championships including 12 from its women’s team and four from its men’s team.
The following is a look at the 16 individuals that will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 27-29) at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Calvin Track and Field Athletes Make Final Push For Nationals at Last-Chance Meets

Down to their chance to qualify for next week’s NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, several Calvin athletes came up big on Friday. In a meet hosted by Augustana University in Rock Island, Illinois, Calvin throwers Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN/Cambridge-Isanti HS) likely solidified their positions in the discus for next week’s national meet as Oberle uncorked a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 145-8 while Reasoner won the competition with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 153-11.
Calvin Announces Recipients of Bere’ & Tiemersma Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—Calvin College has announced the 2010 recipients of its highest honors for men’s and women’s athletics: the Beré Memorial Award and the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award.
Greg Snapper of Madison, Wisconsin, is this year’s Beré Memorial Award winner while Emily Ottenhoff of Palos Heights, Illinois, is this year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award.

Oosterhouse and Bressler Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large Teams

GRAND RAPIDS - Two Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named to the all-district first team. As members of the first team, Oosterhouse and Bressler now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® consideration.
Calvin Lands Three on All-MIAA Baseball Teams

Three members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Junior Keith Spoelstra has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Andrew Bosma and sophomore Tyler Berger have been named to the All-MIAA second team.Spoelstra is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. In conference play, Spoelstra was particularly effective, producing a 5-2 record with a league-leading 1.99 earned run average.
Men’s Basketball Team Finishes Second in Final NCAA III Attendance Figures

Calvin College is once again among the NCAA III leaders in men’s basketball attendance. Calvin finished second in this year’s standings with an average of 2,135 fans per game. MIAA rival Hope repeated as the NCAA III attendance champion in men’s basketball for the eighth straight year as it averaged 2,836 fans a game during the 2009-2010 season. Hope’s attendance crown is its 12th.
Combined, Calvin and Hope have now combined to win the last 12 NCAA III attendance crowns.

CHICAGO, IL - A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at the Penultimate Invitational hosted by the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. Over the course of the competition, Calvin recorded six NCAA III provisional qualifying performances and one automatic mark.

NAPERVILLE, IL - the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out competition at the two-day Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College Friday night. Over the course of the two days of competition, Calvin produced a number of NCAA III provisional qualifying performances.
Calvin Finishes Second in MIAA Commissoiner’s Cup Standings - Wins MIAA Women’s All-Sports Award

In one of the closest finishes in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings history, Calvin has finished second, one point behind Hope in the final 2009-10 MIAA Commissioner’s Cup race. Hope finished with an overall point total of 209 points with Calvin second with 208 points. Calvin did win the women’s MIAA All-Sports Award competition however, finishing with a total of 116 points with Hope second with 109. Hope won the MIAA Men’s All-Sports Award with 100 points with Calvin second with 92 points.
