Calvin picked up a pair of conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, defeating Kalamazoo 10-0 in five innings and 13-3 in six innings. The Knights are now 8-9 overall and 4-6 in MIAA play.
Softball Drops Both End of Doubleheader With Hope

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope on Monday, falling 4-0 and 4-1. Monday’s twinbill marked a meeting of coach and pupil as longtime Hope coach Karla Wolters went head-to-head against first-year Calvin softball coach Sharon DeKleine who was an All-American shortstop and pitcher for Wolters when Wolters served as Calvin’s head softball coach in the mid 1980’s. DeKleine also served as Wolter’s pitching coach last year at Hope.
Jon Kuiper Ties For 19th Place Individually at Purple and White Invitational

LOCKBOURNE, OH - Calvin College senior Jon Kuiper completed competition at the 36-hole Purple and White Invitational this weekend host by Capital University. Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished the tournament tied for 19th place with a two-day total of 161 strokes, firing a round of 78 and then carding a score of 83 on Saturday.
Calvin Track & Field Teams Compete at Ferris State Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS - the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
On the women’s side, junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) won the discus with a season best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 146-7. She also took second in the shot put with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 44-6 1/4. Calvin junior Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS was second in the discus with a throw of 134-6.
Women’s Tennis Defeats Adrian 9-0

Calvin improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in MIAA competition with a 9-0 win over visiting Adrian Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. Winners for Calvin in singles play were junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS), senior Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS), senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS), junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) and senior Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL).
Men’s Tennis Closes out GLCA Tournament With 7-2 Win Over Wooster

GRANVILLE, OH—Calvin closed out play at the GLCA Tournament Saturday morning with a 7-2 victory over the College of Wooster to run its season record to 9-6. Calvin recorded a 2-1 record at the GLCA Tourney, defeating Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster while falling to eventual tournament champion Carnegie Mellon.
Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Albion - Salvages Series Split With Brits

ALBION - Calvin bounced back with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday to salvage a split of a four-game weekend series with Albion. On Friday, Calvin suffered a pair of defeats to Albion at home but on Saturday, the Knights rode the strong arms of junior righthanders Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) and Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) for a pair of road wins.
In game one on Saturday, Groenewold went the distance in pitching the Knights to an 8-3 victory. In game two, Spoelstra tossed a complete-game three-hitter in helping the Knights record a 4-1 win.

On a warm and sunny April afternoon, Calvin’s softball team came out Saturday to compete in a pair of conference games against the Albion Britons. The teams split the doubleheader as Albion squeaked out a 1-0 win in 10 innings in the first game, and Calvin finally got the offense going in game two as it won by a score of 5-4.
The first of the two games was a marathon to say the least and perhaps one of the best pitchers duels that Calvin has been in so far this season. Freshman pitcher Shelby Mast went head to head against Albion freshman pitcher Emily Carlson, and both pitchers went into extra innings holding the other team scoreless through seven.
Mark Christner Named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Waynesburg University

Longtime Calvin men’s basketball assistant coach Mark Christner has been named the head men’s basketball coach at Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. A native of Big Rapids, Christner will take over the helm of a Waynesburg program that is an NCAA Division III institution and a member of the President’s Athletic Conference. Waynesburg is a private Christian University located south of Pittsburgh that was founded by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Jon Kuiper tied for 14th After Day One of Capital University Purple & White Tournament

LOCKBOURNE, OH - Calvin College senior Jon Kuiper is in a tie for 14th place after day one of the Capital University Purple & White Invitational on Friday. A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Kuiper carded a score of 78 on the first day of competition.
The 36-hole tournament will conclude with a final 18-hole round on Saturday. Capital University is hosting the tournament at the Foxfire Golf Club.
