Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Olivet

Calvin split a doubleheader with the visiting Comets of Olivet on Saturday, winning the opener 7-5 and losing the nightcap 8-2. The Knights are now 12-17 overall and 9-11 in MIAA play.
In game one, Calvin built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second. Freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) had a two-run RBI single in the first. Olivet (6-23, overall 4-16 MIAA) came back with two runs in the top of the third but the Knights answered with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to center by Tos that plated freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had reached on a one-out double.
Men’s Tennis Defeated by Kalamazoo 9-0

The nationally-ranked Kalamazoo men’s tennis team handed Calvin a 9-0 defeat at Kalamazoo’s Markin Center Saturday afternoon. Ranked 19th nationally, Kalamazoo took all three doubles points and then swept the six singles flights in straight sets.
Calvin drops to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in MIAA competition with the loss. Calvin closes out its MIAA dual match campaign next Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m.
Elizabeth Smit Shatters School Record in 3,000 Meter Steeplechase at Hillsdale Gina Relays

HILLSDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams came up with several sterling performances on Friday night at the Hillsdale Gina Relays. Calvin was led by its distance contingent on Friday night, particularly from its women’s team.
Senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) qualified automatically with a school record time of 10:29.55 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, breaking her own school record by nearly 15 seconds. In the women’s 10,000 meters, senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was one of four Calvin runners to post NCAA III provisional qualifying times as she placed third in a time of 35:48.14. Koster’s time was just .14 off an automatic qualifying time and will almost certainly cement her ticket to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May.

OLIVET - Calvin split a doubleheader at Olivet on Friday, winning game one 6-3 and losing game two 4-3. The Knights are now 11-16 overall and 8-10 in MIAA competition.
In game one, junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) went the distance, striking out four and walking one while scattering seven hits. Steiner was staked to an early lead as the Knights scored four times in the top of the first inning on the strength of two hits and one Olivet error. Freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) smashed his second home run of the season in the inning while junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) had an RBI single.

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday to Aquinas, falling 1-0 and 6-0.
In the first game, Calvin received a fantastic pitching performance from freshman Shelby Mast but a late run in the fifth inning for the Saints sparked their 1-0 victory. The second game saw fatigue take over as Calvin suffered a 6-0 loss, pushing its overall record to 9-18 on the season. Game one of Thursday’s doubleheader against Aquinas went into the fifth inning before a Saint even reached base. Mast gave up a hit and a walk in that inning and on a passed ball with two outs, Aquinas scored the lone run of the game.
Calvin Women’s Tennis Team Defeats Albion 6-3 - Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Play

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team improved to 14-3 overall and more importantly to 7-0 in MIAA competition with a 6-3 victory over Albion Thursday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. Calvin fell behind 2-1 after doubles play but rallied to win five of six singles flights to claim the win. Calvin will close out its MIAA dual match campaign next Monday, bidding to become the first Calvin team since 1981 to post an unbeaten MIAA dual match campaign.

Calvin bumped its overall record to 12-7 and its conference mark to 3-1 with an 8-1 conference victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University Wednesday at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin grabbed an immediate 3-0 lead in doubles play, winning all three flights by scores of 8-4. Roland Eldridge and Preston Phillips picked up a win at No. 1 doubles after trailing 2-1 early on. Andrew Rescorla and Brian DeMaagd then teamed up for the win at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Jon Goorhouse and junior Andrew DeVlieger came up with the win at No. 3 doubles.

ADRIAN - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 9-0 conference victory at Adrian on Tuesday. The Knights are currently 11-7 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. Picking up singles victories for Calvin on Tuesday were Roland Eldridge, Preston Phillips, Brian DeMaagd, Andrew Rescorla, Philip Reinken and Jon Goorhouse.
Phillips and Reinken are now both 10-5 in singles play this year.
Softball Drops Both End of a Doubleheader With Cornerstone

Calvin came up just short in a pair of one-run defeats to visiting Cornerstone University Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex as the Knights were defeated 4-3 and 5-4 with the second game lasting eight innings.
In the opener, Cornerstone (9-28) scored a pair of quick runs in the first inning on the strength of three hits. Calvin (9-15) came back with a run in the fourth as junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) reached base on a lead-off double and later scored on an error.
Baseball Falls 6-4 to Davenport

KENTWOOD - Calvin dipped to 10-15 overall with a 6-4 loss to Davenport University Monday afternoon at East Kentwood High School. The game followed a familiar pattern for the Knights as Calvin fell behind early only to mount a late comeback effort that fell just short.
Davenport (16-20) grabbed a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first after the Knights had taken a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double in the top of the first by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) that plated sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) from first.
