KALAMAZOO—The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of matches on Friday at the MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo, defeating Alma 5-0 in the first round and then falling to Hope 5-3 in the semifinals. The Knights (14-9) will face Albion in the third place match on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Kalamazoo’s Stowe Stadium. If the case of rain, the match will be moved indoors to Kalamazoo’s Markin Tennis Center.Prior to the start of the tournament, all seven men’s tennis teams competing at the tournament donned royal blue t-shirts designed by Hope men’s tennis coach Steve Gorno that honored Calvin junior men’s tennis player Matt DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS). DeVlieger is currently continuing his rehabilitation from a December 2009 scuba diving accident that left him paralyzed from the waste down.
The T-shirts were designed by Gorno as a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the medical expenses that the DeVlieger family is incurring as Matt recovers. The shirt was for sale on Thursday, April 29, at Johnny’s, Calvin’s on-campus coffee shop and continues to be available via Facebook at: Matt DeVlieger T-Shirt Facebook Page

HOLLAND - For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has advanced to the championship final of the MIAA Tournament. The top-seeded Knights did so in dramatic fashion on Friday, defeating third-seeded Albion 6-3 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Friday afternoon at the Holland Christian High School Tennis Courts.
Calvin will face second-seeded Hope in the MIAA Tournament finals at 10:30 a.m. indoors at Hope’s DeWitt Tennis Center with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

With rain clouds looming ominously on the horizon of Calvin Field on Calvin College’s campus, the Knights went to work Thursday afternoon against what has been recently an extremely hot Trine Thunder team. The Knights came into the day the 5th place team in the conference with a 9-11 MIAA record, four games behind a three-way second place tie that Trine shares with Hope and Albion at 13-7. Trine took game one of the doubleheader 5-2, but the Knights managed to split the day by taking the second game 6-3 on some great pitching from a variety of Calvin pitchers.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Belles of Saint Mary’s flexed their offensive muscles on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Calvin by scores of 8-2 and 15-0. Saint Mary’s entered Wednesday’s twinbill ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA III statistics in team batting average. The Belles continued to beef up their batting average against Calvin, collecting 27 hits in the two games including seven of the extra-base variety.

The Calvin women’s track and field team has risen to the number-one spot in the most recent Division III National Rankings released this morning by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Calvin holds the top spot with 152.42 points with Illinois Wesleyan second with 144.10 points and Wisconsin-Oshkosh third with 125.15 points.
The rankings are achieved through a mathematical formulae based on current national descending order lists. The rankings should not be confused as a “form chart” or a hard-line predictor of NCAA Championship team finishes, but as an indicator of those who have the best chances and deepest rosters to compete as the nation’s best.

Grand Rapids –Calvin’s men’s tennis team took on the Albion Britons on Tuesday afternoon in search of a 3rd place finish in the MIAA. The Knights defeated the Britons 6-3 to clinch the third seed in this weekend’s MIAA tournament and an opening round matchup with the Alma Scots.

Calvin dropped a pair of non-conference games to the visiting Maples Leafs of Goshen College Tuesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. In the opener, Calvin outhit Goshen 9-5 and freshman Shelby Mast struck out seven Goshen batters but the Maple Leafs scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Calvin grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the third on an RBI single by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).

ALMA—For the first time since 1982, the Calvin women’s tennis team has captured an MIAA championship. The Knights clinched the outright league crown with a 9-0 win at Alma Monday afternoon. The Knights finish the MIAA regular season 8-0, marking just the second time in school history that the Knights swept through the league dual match schedule unbeaten. Calvin’s only other unbeaten MIAA campaign came in 1981 when the Knights went 6-0. Calvin captured the 1981 MIAA title outright and shared the 1982 league crown. Prior to this year, the Knights had not won a league championship since.

Calvin’s track and field athletes were split up on Saturday with half competing at the Hillsdale Gina Relays with the other half competing at the Aquinas College Open at Houseman Field.
At the Hillsdale Gina Relays, junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 55.29 in winning the 400 meters. She also anchored Calvin’s 4x400 meter relay team that posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:54.55 that was good for second place. The relay included senior Katie Roelofs (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and sophomore Jordan Gabrielse (Unity Christian HS). In the women’s pole vault, senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) achieved a career-best in placing second with an NCAA III provisional qualifying vault of 12-1 1/2 that placed her second.

Calvin hit the double-digit plateau in victories in dramatic fashion on Saturday, upsetting regionally-ranked Trine 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Mandy Johnson drove in the winning run with a one-out single to right that scored junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) from third base with the winning run. Trailing 4-3, Calvin mounted a seventh inning rally as sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base on an error and move to second on the errant throw. VandenAkker then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored moments later on a second wild pitch to tie the game. VanRooyen followed with a single up the middle and moved to third on another Trine error, setting up Johnson’s walk-off heroics.2 3 > Last »
