Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Women’s Basketball MVP - Verkaik and Van Eck Named to All-MIAA 1st Team

For the first time in the history of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a freshman has been named the Most Valuable Player in women’s basketball.
Calvin freshman Carissa Verkaik was so honored on Monday afternoon by the MIAA. She is the seventh individual in Calvin women’s basketball history to be named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player. Verkaik was also named to the All-MIAA first team.
Mantel and Veltema Named to All-MIAA First Team

The All-MIAA men’s basketball teams have been announced and Calvin seniors John Mantel and Matt Veltema have both been selected to the All-MIAA first team. Mantel is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team while Veltema is making his first appearance.
Mantel is from Chelsea and is a graduate of Chelsea High School. In conference play this year, Mantel finished ninth in the MIAA in scoring (13.1 ppg), third in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and ninth in blocked shots per game (1.07). He was named MIAA Player of the Week once.
Women’s Basketball Team Headed to Wiconsin to Face St. Nobert (WI) in NCAA III First Round Game

The Calvin women’s basketball team has gained an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights (24-4) will journey to DePere, Wisconsin, to face host St. Norbert (22-3) in a first round game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (CST). Calvin will be part of a four-team regional field at St. Norbert with UW-Stevens Point (21-6) set to take on Minnesota-Morris (19-7) in Friday’s other first round game at 5 p.m. (CST).
Friday’s winners will play in the regional final Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, senior citizens and children.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Place Individuals on USTFCCA All-Academic Teams

A group of individuals from the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams have received All-Academic accolades from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America.
The USTFCCCA All-Academic award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 35 among the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
Calvin Track and Field Teams Compete at MIAA Invitational Hosted by Trine University

ANGOLA, IN—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Trine Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday. In the men’s competition, Calvin took first with 139.5 points, 29.5 points ahead of Hope. In the women’s competition, Calvin rolled up a first place total of 199 points, 71 points ahead of Hope.
Women’s Tennis Defeats North Central/Falls to Wheaton Over Weekend

The regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis teams split a pair of non-conference matches this past weekend, defeating North Central (IL) 8-1 on Friday night and then falling at nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) 6-3 on Saturday evening.
Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, the Knights are now 2-1 overall.
