MINNEAPOLIS, MN—For the third time in her career, Calvin College senior Emily Roberts has gained NCAA III All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke. A native of DeKalb, Illinois, Roberts took eighth in the event Friday night at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships with a time of 1:05.28. Roberts has competed in the event four consecutive years at the national meet, placing third in 2007, 11th in 2008 and seventh in 2009. Top eight finishers are All-Americans while those finishing in spots nine-through-16 are honorable mention All-Americans.

GRANDVILLE - The Calvin men’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season late Thursday night, bowing to Division II Grand Valley State University 9-0 at the Ramblewood Tennis Courts. Calvin is now 3-1 on the year. Calvin is scheduled to return to action next Monday when it faces Otterbein at noon in a match scheduled to played in Orlando, Florida.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Casey Herman is an NCAA III All-American on the one-meter diving board. A native of Libertyville, Illinois, Herman placed seventh on the one-meter board Thursday night at the NCAA III Championships with a score of 396.15 points. A year ago, Herman placed eighth on the one-meter board to earn All-America accolades. Herman joins Sari Brummel (Class of 1987) and Erica Deur (Class of 2009) as the only multiple All-America divers in Calvin women’s swimming and diving history.

The post-season awards list continues to grow for Calvin senior John Mantel. The Chelsea native was named to the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Division III All-District second team this afternoon. It marks the third consecutive year that a Calvin men’s basketball player has landed NABC All-District honors as Caleb Veldhouse was a second team selection in 2008 and 2009.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team broke into the scoring column on day one of the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota with a 12th place finish in the 200 medley relay. The 12th place finish by the Calvin quartet of freshman Kristen Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN), senior Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), junior Caitlin Alexander (Holland Christian HS) and junior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH) in a time of 1:46.92 was good for 10 points and put the Knights in 20th place with three days of competition left.

The first-ever tennis match at the newly refurbished Strikwerda Tennis Courts took place on Wednesday and the regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team came away with an 8-1 victory over visiting Olivet. Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, Calvin is now 4-1 overall. The victory will serve as a precursor to Calvin’s spring break trip with the Knights scheduled to leave for Orlando, Florida, on Friday. The Calvin Sports Information Department caught up with Calvin women’s tennis coach Jerry Bergsma after Wednesday’s victory over Olivet and talked about the upcoming spring trip and the MIAA season yet to come. Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has been named to the d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team in women’s basketball.
In addition, Verkaik has been named the d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is the first player from Calvin to be named Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year by d3hoops.com which has been selecting all-region teams since the 2001-02 season.
Verkaik is the fourth individual in Calvin women’s basketball history to receive d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region honors as Marcia Harris, Lisa Winkle and Kristen McDonald were all previously so honored.

Calvin College senior John Mantel will kick off his final spring break as a Calvin student with one final collegiate basketball game. A native of Chelsea and a graduate of Chelsea High School, Mantel has been selected to participate in the first-ever NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Division III College All-Star game this Saturday in Salem, Virginia.
The NABC All-Star game was instituted this year after the NABC decided to permanently eliminate the consolation game from the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Final Four.

TERRE HAUTE, IN—In its season debut, the Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, falling 5-1 and 12-1. Ranked 16th in the most recent d3baseball.com Top 25 poll, Rose-Hulman jumped on Calvin for four runs in the opening three innings of game one to build a 4-0 lead.
Saturday, March 13, 2010NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships Site
The Calvin women’s track and field team placed 11th at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships with 18 points. The Knights accomplished the 11th place berth behind two individuals as junior Rachel Boerner captured the national title in the 400 meters with a time of 55.95 while junior Sarah Reasoner was second in the shot put with a throw of 46-4. Senior Jed Christiansen also competed in the men’s 5,000 meters, placing 10th with a time of 15:03.
