Baseball Splits Twinbill With Grinnell College in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Grinnell College on Monday afternoon, falling in the opener 2-1 and then coming back to win the nightcap 6-4.
In the opener, Calvin was unable to come up with enough run support to aid junior Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) who went the distance but suffered the hard-luck loss.

ORLANDO, FL - Calvin rolled to a 9-0 victory over Otterbein College Monday afternoon. The Knights are now 4-1 on the year. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it face North Central at 3 p.m.
Shelby Mast Tosses No-Hitter in Collegiate Debut / Hands DeKleine First Win as Calvin Coach

TUCSON, AZ - It’s safe to say that neither Sharon DeKleine or Shelby Mast will forget Monday’s season opener against the Cardinals of Otterbein College. The contest not only marked the Calvin head coaching debut for DeKleine, but also the collegiate debut for Mast who graduated from Hudsonville High School last spring.
In her collegiate debut, Mast tossed a no-hitter in a 7-2 Calvin victory. In the process, she handed DeKleine her first victory as a head college coach.

Calvin’s track and field success over the years has been one of the most consistent of all the sports offered here. Last Saturday the Knights added another chapter to that rich history as junior Rachel Boerner won the 400 meters with a time of 55.95. Boerner has already proven herself a veteran runner on this deep track team for the Knights, but this accomplishment certainly tops the list of her many accolades.
A native of Bergenfield New Jersey, Boerner would eventually graduate high school from the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Minnesota. Her brother-in-law, a Calvin alumnus, encouraged her to consider coming to Grand Rapids for her undergraduate studies, and now she has won a national title as a Calvin runner.

Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has been named the Division III Freshman of the Year in women’s basketball by d3hoops.com. The award was announced shortly before the tipoff of Saturday’s NCAA III Championship final between Hope and Washington University (MO). Verkaik’s honor gave the MIAA a clean sweep of the top two playing awards annoucned by d3hoops.com as Hope junior Carrie Snikkers was named the Division III Player of the Year by d3hoops.com.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has also been named to the d3hoops.com All-America third team announced today. Earlier this week, Verkaik was named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year earlier this week by d3hoops.com. She joins Lisa Winkle (2006 honorable mention, 2007 third team) as the only d3hoops.com All-Americans in Calvin women’s basketball history.
Track & Field Teams Open Outdoor Campaigns in Strong Fashion At Rhodes Open

MEMPHIS, TN – The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams both had strong starts to their outdoor seasons at the Rhodes College Open Invitational on Saturday. Junior Rachel Boerner led the way with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of of 1:01.64 in the 400 meter hurdles. The time came just one week after Boerner captured the 400 meter national title at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Mantel Scores Seven Points, Grabs Five Boards in NABC Division III All-Star Game in Salem, Virginia

Calvin College senior John Mantel suited up in a Calvin men’s basketball uniform one final time Saturday morning in Salem, Virginia. Mantel was a member of the West Division division in the first-ever NABC Division III All-Star game. The game was played prior to the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Championship game in Salem on Saturday. The East Team edged the West Team 109-107 in overtime. Mantel finished the game with seven points and five rebounds. He was also credited with two steals. In 20 minutes of action, Mantel was 3 for 8 from field and 1 of 2 from three-point range.

VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team picked up its first victory of the year on Saturday in defeating Western Connecticut State 13-8 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader.
In the opener, Calvin (1-3) suffered a 3-1 defeat despite a strong pitching performance from senior Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS). Sietsema (0-2) struck out seven batters in the loss. Sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) both went 2-for-3 for the Knights in the loss.
Women’s Tennis Defeats Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Spring Break Opener

The regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the opener of its spring trip to Orlando, Florida. The Knights wasted little time in improving their overall record to 5-1. Calvin returns to action on Monday for a pair of matches, facing Otterbein at noon and regionally-ranked Colby College at 5:30 p.m.
Calvin Women Finish 24th At NCAA III Championships - Counsel and Vail Score in 200 Breaststroke

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team added two more honorable mention All-America berths Saturday night at the NCAA III Championships to finish in 24th place with 43 points. Both honorable mention All-America selections came in the 200 breaststroke with freshman Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) taking 11th in the consolation finals with a career-best time of 2:20.83 while senior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) was 15th in a time of 2:23.33. On the men’s side Saturday, freshman Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the 100 freestyle prelims but did not advance. Rushlow recorded a time of 47.18 that was good for 42nd place. During the meet, Rushlow competed in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.
