The MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled to be held February 11-13 at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. Morning prelims will begin each day at 10 a.m. with championship finals set for 6 p.m. each evening.
Tickets for Friday and Saturday’s championship finals are now sold out. A limited amount of tickets are still available for Thursday’s championship finals as well as for the prelims each morning.

Kiff Vanden Heuvel, a 1992 Calvin College graduate, made his Super Bowl debut Sunday night.
Also a 1988 Grand Rapids South Christian High School graduate, Vanden Heuvel served as the lead pitchman for a series of Denny’s ads that appeared throughout the second half of Sunday night’s CBS broadcast of the Super Bowl game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. Vanden Heuvel’s first ad appeared in the third quarter as he promoted Denny’s upcoming free Grand Slam breakfast promotion on February 9. He later did the voice over for a series of subsequent ads for the Denny’s promotion.

The Calvin men’s tennis team kicked off its season on Saturday with a pair of dual matches inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin opened the day with a 9-0 victory over Grand Rapids Community College and followed with a 7-2 win over Spring Arbor later Saturday evening.
Calvin’s victory over Grand Rapids Community College will not count on its season record as it did not come against a four-year institution.
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Grand Rapids City Tournament with Aquinas, Grand Rapids Community College and Hope also competing.

After dropping pair of tough losses on the road at Hope and Olivet, the Knights got back on track Saturday as they managed to hold of a young and resilient Trine team and maintain a share of first place with Hope at the top of the conference standings.
John Mantel led the way for the Knights with 20 points and 13 rebounds, enough for his 14th career double-double, and Danny Rodts finished close behind with 19 points, hitting on 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Calvin College senior Brook Van Eck has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV third team in women’s basketball in the college division.
A graduate of Lowell High School, Van Eck carries a 3.68 grade point average while majoring in special education.
A senior forward, Van Eck is averaging 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a game this year on a Calvin team that is currently 18-3 overall and ranked ninth nationally. Earlier this season, Van Eck was named the Most Valuable Player of the Wilmington Tip-Off Tournament and was later named to the all-tourmament team of the Olivet Thanksgiving Classic.

Over the last nine years, Ian Tigchelaar has had a first-hand look at the resurgence of the New Orleans Saints.
A 1995 Calvin College graduate, Tigchelaar has been with the Saintsí organization since 2001 and currently serves as the director of business/marketing operations with the NFL franchise. This week, he is in Miami, Florida, with the team for its first-ever trip to the Super Bowl where the Saints will face the Indianapolis Colts.

OLIVET—A rugged first half led to a deficit that was too big to overcome for the Calvin men’s basketball team Wednesday evening as the Knights suffered an 84-61 defeat at Olivet. The loss drops Calvin into a tie for first place in the MIAA standing with rival Hope as the Knights are now 7-2 in league play including 12-8 overall.
Olivet (10-10 overall, 5-4 MIAA) raced out to a 44-26 halftime lead, shooting 55.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Olivet’s Andre Evans had the hot hand in the first half with 19 points, en route to finishing with a game-high 27 points on 10 of 16 shooting including 4 of 7 from three-point range.

A 12-0 run in the final 4:39 of play allowed the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope to record a 61-50 victory over the Knights of Calvin Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena in a meeting of nationally-ranked teams.
Hope (19-1 overall, 11-0 MIAA) entered Wednesday’s game ranked fourth nationally while Calvin (18-3 overall, 10-2 MIAA) came in ranked ninth.
Calvin took a 50-49 lead on a jumper by freshman Carissa Verkaik with 5:35 left to play but the Flying Dutch proceeded to rip off 12 unanswered points fueled by eight points by freshman Liz Ellis down the stretch, six of which came on three-point shots.

The Calvin women’s basketball team has moved up in the latest set of national rankings as the Knights are ranked ninth in the most recent d3hoops.com Top 25 poll and ninth in the USA Today/ESPN Division III poll conducted by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The Knights were ranked 10th in both national polls a week ago.
Calvin is currently 18-2 overall and 10-1 in the MIAA. Calvin will host rival Hope Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin Van Noord Arena in a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings. Ranked fourth in both national polls, Hope will carry an overall record of 18-1 and a league mark of 10-0 into Wednesday’s contest.
