Calvin Deadlocked With Hope For MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Lead

The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings through the recently completed MIAA winter sports season have been released and Calvin and Hope are tied for first place with 136 points. The MIAA Commissionerís Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 18 sports for men and women.

ē The final Commissionerís Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s best standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women. The tabulation through the winter season is based on 5-of-6 sports for men and 5-of-6 sports for women.

More NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks for Calvin Track & Field Teams

ALLENDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams posted a pair of NCAA (indoor) provisional qualifying marks Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championshipos hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Both provisional performances came in the women’s competition. Calvin’s first provisional mark came in the women’s shot put as junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) took seventh in the shot put with a provisional mark of 42-8 3/4.

In the distance medley relay, Calvin’s quartet of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL), junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) took first place with a provisional qualifying tie of 12:04.18.

All-MIAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Teams Announced

The All-MIAA men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been announced and six members of the Calvin women’s team have been so honored while one member of the Calvin men’s team has been selected.

Calvin athletes that have been selected to the All-MIAA women’s swimming and diving team include seniors Emily Roberts, Maggie Vail and Casey Herman, junior Monica Bressler and freshmen Rachel Bos and Elizabeth Counsell.

On the men’s side, Calvin freshman Mark Rushlow has been named to the All-MIAA team.

Calvin Women’s Basketball Escapes Alma With 65-62 Win - To Host Olivet in MIAA Tourney

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team escaped Alma Saturday afternoon with a 65-62 victory to finish league play at 14-2. The Knights trailed 59-56 with 3:20 left to play but layup by Carissa Verkaik and a triple by Leah Mattson gave the Knights the lead for good. Verkaik had 18 points to win the MIAA scoring crown. Allison Wolffis also had 12 points and Brook Van Eck 11 points. Calvin will host Olivet in a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Calvin Men’s Basketball Team Captures Outright MIAA Title With OT Win Over Alma

The Calvin men’s basketball team captured the outright MIAA title with a 78-73 overtime victory over Alma Saturday at Van Noord Arena. The Knights finish 12-2 in league play, one game ahead of 11-3 Hope. Calvin will host Alma in a first round MIAA Tournament game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Calvin was led in scoring by junior Brent Schuster with 18 points. Schuster sank two free throws with six seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Carissa Verkaik Featured on WZZM-TV13 For Record Scoring Performance

On Wednesday night, Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik established a new Calvin and MIAA single-game scoring record with 46 points in a 93-77 victory over Adrian. Verkaik was 18 of 20 from the field, 3 of 3 from three-point range and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Her 18 field goals is also a new Calvin and MIAA single-game record. Her scoring performance is also a single-game high in NCAA III women’s basketball this season.

On Thursday, Grand Rapids ABC affiliate WZZM-TV 13 swung by the Calvin campus for a feature story on Verkaik’s scoring performance.

Itís always great to see athletes rewrite the record books.

Wednesday night in the last regular season game at the Van Noord Arena, freshman Carissa Verkaik of Holland Christian High School rewrote the Calvin record books, carving her name into Knights history as she scored 46 points, the new Calvin and MIAA single game scoring record. Verkaik for 18 for 20 from the field, including 3 for 3 from three-point range while connecting on 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Verkaik’s point total is also an NCAA III women’s single-game scoring-high this year.

Men’s Basketball Clinches Share of MIAA Regular Season Title & Top Seed for MIAA Tournament

ALBION—The Calvin men’s basketball team clinched a share of its second consecutive MIAA title and the top seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament with a 78-66 victory at Albion Wednesday night. Combined with Adrian’s 73-68 victory over Hope, Calvin moves into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings with one game left to play in the MIAA regular season. Calvin (16-8 overall, 11-2 MIAA) can clinch the outright title on Saturday with either a win over Alma on Saturday at Calvin or a Trine victory at Hope (10-3 MIAA).

Men’s Tennis Competes at Grand Rapids City Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS Ė The Calvin menís tennis team competed at the two-day Grand Rapids City Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Orchard Hills Tennis Center. The two day competition was unscored. In addition to Calvin, teams competing included Aquinas, Grand Valley State and Grand Rapids Community College.
