Calvin Track & Field Teams Open Indoor Campaigns at Mike Lints Alumni Open at GVSU

ALLENDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns on Friday night at the Mike Lints Alumni Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University.
On the men’s side, Calvin’s distance contingent posted several sterling efforts led by sophomre Nick Kramer who won the 5,000 meter run with an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 14:51.21. Kramer was one of five Calvin runners in the top seven with sophomore Matt Vander Roest second (15:11.6), senior Aaron Goodman fourth (15:21.6), senior Tim Langenberg sixth (15:24.0) and sophomore Dan Kerr seventh (15:24.

The Calvin Sports Information office recently caught up with the three seniors on the Calvin women’s basketball team: Amber Benthem, Brook Van Eck and Emily Ottenhoff for audio interviews. In all three interviews, the players talk about the current season and their overall time at Calvin as student-athletes.
All three seniors have played key roles in helping the Calvin women’s basketball team jump out to a 13-1 overall record including a league record of 5-0. Van Eck averages 10.4 points a game while Benthem comes in at 6.7 points and Ottenhoff 5.6 points per contest.
The Knights are currently ranked 12th in the USA TODAY/ESPN Division III Coaches’ poll and 17th in the most recent d3hoops.com top 25 poll. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to Adrian for a 3 p.m. contest.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Trine on the Road 81-66 - Retains Share of First Place in MIAA Standings

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin stretched its win streak to three games and retained a share of first place in the MIAA standings with an 81-66 victory over Trine Wednesday night at Trine’s Hershey Hall.
Calvin remains tied with Albion at 3-0 in the MIAA standings. Albion handed Kalamazoo its first conference defeat of the year on Wednesday, defeating the Hornets 64-55, leaving the Knights and Britons alone in first place.
Calvin (8-6 overall, 3-0 MIAA) used a blistering first half offensive shooting performance to roll out to a 52-33 halftime lead. Calvin shot 56.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes including 6 of 13 (.462) from three-point range.

GRAND RAPIDS - Still fresh off a long holiday break, the twelfth ranked Knights maintained their perfect 2010 MIAA record with a win Wednesday night at home against the Britons of Albion. Victorious by a score of 65-44, Calvin played good offense and even better defense, especially in the second half.
The Knights were led again by freshman Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI), who finished with 17 points and 13 boards. Verkaik also had a pair of big blocks on the night. Senior Amber Benthem (McBain, MI) and sophomore Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns, MI) added 11 points and junior Brook Van Eck (Lowell, MI) chipped in 7 points and grabbed 3 boards.

Women’s Basketball Moves Up In National Rankings - Prepares for MIAA Tilt With Albion Wednesday

The Calvin women’s basketball team continues to move up the national rankings. The Knights are now ranked 12th in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Poll - up one spot from a week ago. In addition, Calvin is ranked 17th in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll - up three spots from the previous week.
Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights are off to a 12-1 start overall and a 4-0 mark in the MIAA. Calvin is currently tied with Hope for first place in the MIAA standings and will host Albion Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

John Mantel Receives MIAA Player of the Week Honors

John Mantel, a senior from Chelsea (Chelsea HS) has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball. Mantel shares the award this week with Kalamazoo’s Joe Prepolec.
Mantel put together back-to-back double-doubles as the Knights opened MIAA play with a pair of home victories. He scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in an 84-75 win over Hope, then followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-61 win over Olivet.
Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Defeat Olivet in Dual Meet Action

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were both victorious in dual meet action against visiting Olivet Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. In the women’s competition, Calvin rolled to a 176-79 victory. In the men’s competition, Calvin held on for a 141-139 victory. The Calvin women are now 3-2 in dual meet action while the Calvin men are 2-3.

Ranked 13th nationally in the coaches’ poll and 20th in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll, Calvin improves to 12-1 overall and to 4-0 in the MIAA. The Knights currently share first place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope.
Calvin jumped out to a 26-13 halftime lead and stretched its lead to as many as 26 points in the second half.

Looking to build off of a big win vs. rival Hope earlier this week, Calvin took on Olivet Saturday at VanNoord Arena January 10th. Calvin(7-6, 2-0MIAA) defeated Olivet(5-8, 0-2MIAA) 65-61. The victory lifts Calvin over the .500 mark for the first time this year and keeps the Knights in a share of first place in the MIAA standings.
