Calvin Men’s Soccer Falls to Messiah in National Title Game 2-0

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Calvin men’s soccer team’s quest for a national title came up one game short as the Knights were defeated by defending national champion Messiah (PA) 2-0 Saturday night in the NCAA III Championship final.
Messiah scored in the 16th minute of play on a long throw-in into the box that was headed in by Messiah’s Danny Thompson. Calvin nearly tied the game in the opening moments of the second half with a quick flurry of shots that were turned away by the Messiah defense. Moments later, Messiah was awarded a penalty kick and made good on the opportunity with Nick Thompson banging in the PK.

Men’s Basketball Falls To Wheaton 74-69 in CCIW/MIAA Classic

HOLLAND- A mere 17 hours after leaving the court on Friday the Knights returned to Holland to take on the sixth ranked Thunder from Wheaton. Despite a very evenly matched game, Calvin (2-4) came up short against Wheaton (5-1) falling by a score of 74-69.
Both teams began the first 10 minutes with a field goal percentage just above the 25 degree temperature outside. After both teams warmed up heading into halftime but the Knights found themselves trailing 33-30 at half.

The Calvin Hope rivalry took ice Friday night for the first installment of a home and home between the two squads.
Hope set the tone early when freshman Justin Johnston rifled a shot from the left wing into the upper right corner giving Hope a 1-0 advantage. Calvin attempted to respond with a power play later in the first period but was hardly able to muster a shot on net. The first period concluded with Hope on top 1-0.
Women’s Basketball Falls to Carthage 58-47 in Meeting of Unbeaten Teams

KENOSHA, WI - In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Carthage put on the defensive clamps to hand the Calvin women’s basketball team its first loss of the year, defeating the Knights 58-47.
Carthage (6-0) limited Calvin (6-1) to just 32.8 percent field goal shooting and scored 23 points off of 22 Calvin turnovers to gain the win.
Senior Brook Van Eck (Lowell HS) led Calvin in defeat with 12 points while freshman Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) had 10 points. Diana Jacklin led Carthage with 21 points and six rebounds.
Carthage was also 10 of 12 at the free throw line while Calvin was just 4 of 4 at the stripe.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Purdue-Calumet University for a 6 p.m. (EST) contest.
Calvin Men’s Soccer Team Headed To National Title Game After 1-0 Win Over Dominican in Semifinals

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Calvin men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA III Championship final on Saturday, December 5. The Knights will face defending national champion Messiah (PA) at 6 pm (EST) in the title game. Calvin advanced with a 1-0 victory over Dominican University Friday night in a national semifinal game. Messiah advanced with a 2-1 win over Williams (MA). The only goal of the game in Calvin’s victory over Dominican came off the right foot of junior Brad Heethuis who banged in his seventh goal of the year including his fifth game-winner. The goal came with just over 12 minutes left in regulation.

Day Two of Calvin Winter Swimming & Diving Invitational In the Books

All day Friday the Calvin Winter Invitational meet continued, with preliminaries events in the morning and final events later in the evening. After Thursday’s distance events, Calvin had strong showings on both the men’s and women’s sides Friday, with good places in the final standings through 59 events. The women are in 4th place of 11 teams with 234 points and the men are in 3rd place of 6 teams with 225 points.
A big highlight for the Calvin women came on the three-meter diving board as freshman Sam Klaasen had a career-best score of 389.35 (11 dives) points to place second.

HOLLAND- Following a disappointing 79-76 home loss to Hope last weekend, the Knights traveled to Holland to play in Hope’s Devos Fieldhouse on the first day of the MIAA/CCIW challenge. Devos Fieldhouse has treated the Knights well in the past and Friday was no exception as the Knights defeated 17th ranked Carthage 72-69. The Knights picked up the victory improving their record to 9-4 overall and 6-0 against neutral site opponents at DeVos Fieldhouse.
Calvin Women’s Soccer Team Lands Three On All-Central Region First Team

Three members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Division III All-Central Region first team. The three players named to the All-Central Region first team from Calvin are seniors Emily Ottenhoff and Allison Boender and junior Carly Prins.
As members of the first team, all three players are now eligible for Division III All-America consideration. All three players are also receiving All-Central Region honors for the first time.

SAN ANTONIO, TX—Thursday was an eventful day for the Calvin men’s soccer team. In addition to a banquet Thursday night, Calvin participated in a service opportunity organized by the NCAA. The Knights were paired up with Kingsborough Middle School where the Knights spoke about the importance of staying in school and pursuing educational goals. Prior to the banquet Thursday night, the Knights had the opportunity for a team photo in front of the historic Alamo, located adjacent to the Menger Hotel where Calvin is staying.

SAN ANTONIO, TX - On Thursday night, the eight competing teams at the NCAA III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Final attended a championships banquet at the San Antonio Convention Center. A representative from each team was invited to give welcoming remarks as well as background on their institution, team and reflections on the competition ahead.
