Calvin is partnering with Stretch Internet and will be streaming live video directly to its Web site from the Van Noord Arena in 2010.
The first video stream to be sent to the Calvin Web site will be the January 6, 2010, Calvin-Hope menís basketball varsity game. Calvin will stream the video and audio feed of the WGVU television broadcast for that game. Future home games in both men’s and women’s basketball as well as women’s volleyball will be a single-camera shot with house audio accompanying the video feed.

PHOENIX, AZ—Calvin’s three-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by Loras (IA) 78-61 on the third and final day of competition at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam.
A rough first half effort proved to be Calvin’s undoing as the Knights (5-6) trailed 46-21 at halftime. Calvin connected on only five first half field goals while allowing Loras (6-6) to shoot 17 of 29 (.586) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.

PHOENIX, AZ—The Calvin men’s basketball team picked up its first victory over Ohio Northern since the 1991-92 season and stretched its win streak to three games in the process with a 70-67 overtime victory over the Polar Bears Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam.
Heading into Tuesday’s game, Ohio Northern had won the last three meetings against Calvin, winning in 1993, 2001 and 2003 with the victories in 1993 and 2001 coming in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin’s last victory over Ohio Northern had been a 65-50 decision on Thanksgiving weekend of Calvin’s 1991-92 national championship season.

PHOENIX, AZ—The Calvin men’s basketball team has put together back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Knights did so in thrilling fashion with a 79-78 victory over Lewis and Clark College (OR) Monday night on the first day of competition at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam. Monday’s game was the first for Calvin since an 86-59 victory over Trinity Christian College (IL) on December 18.
Calvin (4-5) led by as many as nine points in the first half but trailed 44-43 at halftime.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in womenís basketball for games played through December 27.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists as the Knights posted a 59-56 victory over Madonna. She has averaged 18.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, tops in the MIAA in both categories, in leading Calvin to an 11-1 start. Verkaik is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The Calvin College men’s soccer team excelled on the field this fall, advancing all the way to the NCAA III Championship finals. Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the Knights have also excelled in the classroom too.
The Calvin men’s soccer team was recently selected as a recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Team Academic Award. To receive the honor, a team needed to post a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or above.
The Calvin men’s soccer team posted a 3.19 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year. This marks the first time the Knights have received the NSCAA College Team Academic Award.

GRAND RAPIDS—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team held off a determined Madonna squad Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Crusaders 59-56 at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Madonna (4-6) held a 53-51 lead with under five minutes remaining but the Knights (11-1) retook the lead at 54-53 on a triple by freshman Kelsey Irwin (Fraser HS) with 3:57 left to play. The triple was the fourth of the game for Irwin who played a key role in cracking Madonna’s zone defense.

OLIVET—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA with a 78-54 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon.
At 10-1, Calvin is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season when it won 25 of its first 26 games.
Calvin’s inside attack proved too much for Olivet to overcome as freshman center Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) had 26 points on 12 of 13 shooting while senior forward Brook Van Eck (Lowell HS) had 11 points and freshman forward Allison Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) 10 points. Sophomore wing Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns HS) also had nine points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of assists.

Calvin gained a much-needed boost of momentum with an 86-59 victory over visiting Trinity Christian College Friday night at Van Noord Arena. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid and boosted Calvin’s season record to 3-5 heading into a 10-day break before the Knights face Lewis and Clark (OR) in a tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 28.
Calvin used a 10-2 run late in the first half to build a 32-23 lead before settling on a 38-32 halftime advantage.
Saturday, December 12, 2009NSCAA Division III All-America Men's Soccer Teams
Calvin College junior midfielder Dan Kmetz has been named a Performance Subaru third team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The award was announced late Friday evening.
A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Kmetz is the first All-American in men’s soccer at Calvin since Kurt Visker was so honored in 2005. A graduate of Strongsville High School, Kmetz is the fifth individual in Calvin men’s soccer history to earn All-America honors, joining Casey TerHaar (1962), Doug DeSmit (1983), Joey Barone (1991) and Visker (2004 & 2005) to have been so honored.
