On the day that is remembered for those who gave their lives in the terrorist attacks of 2001, the Calvin men’s soccer team rose to the challenge and defeated Wheaton College by a tight score of 2-1.

It was the first time that Calvin had registered a win against the Thunder since 1992, stopping the 12-0-1 streak that Wheaton had amassed in that span of time.  Sophomore Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville, MI) headed in an early goal to give the Knights the lead, and junior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH) added a goal with a wind-guided corner kick later in the first half.  Wheaton would close the deficit to 2-1 shortly before halftime off of a vicious strike by sophomore Drew Golz (River Forest, ILL), but a scoreless second half saw the Knights prevail.

In a rain-interrupted contest at Calvin’s Zuidema soccer field, the Calvin women’s soccer team continued its unbeaten streak and prevailed in a 3-0 shut-out over the Madonna Crusaders Wednesday afternoon.

After trading opportunities in the early stages of the game, Carly Prins knocked a header into the top shelf of the goal to put Calvin up a score over the Crusaders of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.  Prins’ header came in the 17th minute on the receiving end of a driven Lauren Heyboer corner kick from the right wing.  That goal was all the Knights would have needed, but they didn’t stop there.

Before Tuesday’s MIAA opener against Albion at the Van Noord Arena, Calvin head coach Amber Warners was honored for her 200th win at Calvin, a victory over Carnegie-Mellon in last year’s Ohio Northern tournament.

After the short ceremony, Warners was quick to give out pointers to her team in a three-set win over the Britons.  That attention to detail is a large reason for Warners’ tremendous success in the game of volleyball.
