Kurt Van Sickel Receives MIAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week Honors In Men’s Soccer

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior forward Kurt Van Sickel has received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors in men’s soccer. Van Sickel shares the award this week with Olivet forward Mike May.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Van Sickel scored four goals this past weekend as the nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team rolled to a pair of victories at a weekend tournament hosted by Wittenberg, Ohio.

GRAND RAPIDS—In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin suffered a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Washington University of St. Louis Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. Ranked 11th in the most recent Division III Coaches poll, Calvin falls to 6-2 on the year while Washington, ranked 20th in the latest coaches’ poll improves to 5-2 on the season.
Volleyball Rebounds To Defeat Mount Union and Mount St. Joseph at Wittenberg Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD, OH—After dropping a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents on Friday night at the Wittenberg Border Battle, Calvin bounced back to defeat Mount Union 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 and the College of Mount St. Joseph 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23.
Ranked 10th in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 8-3 on the year after finishing 2-2 at the weekend tournament.

ADRIAN—The Calvin men’s golf team turned in another solid performance at the third MIAA jamboree of the year and in the process, inched closer to second place in the overall MIAA standings Saturday afternoon at the Lenawee Country Club.
At Saturday’s outing hosted by Adrian College, Calvin posted a second place team score of 304 strokes, just two strokes behind Hope. The Knights also finished six strokes ahead of Adrian and now trail the Bulldogs by just three strokes in the overall team standings. The Knights are also just eight strokes back of league-leading Hope.
Men’s Soccer Rolls To 8-0 Win Over Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, OH—The Calvin men’s soccer team lit up the scoreboard on Saturday on the second and final day of competition at the Wittenberg Invitational, defeating host Wittenberg 8-0 Saturday afternoon. Ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (5-1-0) roared out to a 7-0 first half lead and then added one more in the opening moments of the second half.
Calvin concluded the tournament with a 2-0 record, outscoring the opposition 11-0 as the Knights also garnered a 3-0 win over Otterbein Friday night.
Calvin Cross Country Teams Host Knight Invite - Women First/Men Second

Calvin’s cross country teams took part in the first race of the 2009 season Saturday as they ran in the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex, a course located on the college’s east campus.
The Knights, an annual national contender in cross country, looked to continue their consistent success in this first race. The women took first in the meet with a score of 28 points, and the men finished second with 83 points behind Allegheny College which tallied 48 points.

Ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (4-1-0) outshot an Otterbein team that tied nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday 22-5.

ANGOLA, IN—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team escaped Trine University’s Hershey Hall with a five-set victory Wednesday night, narrowly avoiding an early conference upset bid by the host Thunder. Calvin edged Trine by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 15-10.
