Men’s Tennis Advances to MIAA Tournament Finals - Will Face Kalamazoo

HOLLAND – For the second consecutive year, the Calvin men’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the finals with a 5-0 first round win over Trine on Thursday and then defeated host Hope 5-4 in the semifinals.

Calvin (16-6) will face top-seeded Kalamazoo (14-8) in the MIAA Tournament Championship final at noon at Holland Christian High School. The winner will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament.

Women’s Tennis Advances to MIAA Tournament Championship Final

KALAMAZOO – For the second straight year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the tournament finals with a 7-0 first round win over Olivet and a 5-3 semifinal victory over host Kalamazoo.

The Knights will face rival Hope in the championship final at noon at Kalamazoo’s Stowe Stadium. The winner will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. In the earlier matchup of the year Hope defeated Calvin 5-4. Hope (18-5) advanced to Friday’s title tilt with a 5-0 first round win over Adrian and a 5-0 win over Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Calvin Track and Field Teams in First Place After Day One of MIAA Championships

ALBION—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams are in first place through one day of competition at at the MIAA Field Day hosted by Albion College but both teams will have to hold off stern challenges from Hope to maintain a grip on the top spots.

The Calvin men are currently in first place with 71 points, 28 points ahead of Hope (43 points) but the Flying Dutchmen advanced several competitors into the finals in the sprint events set for Friday afternoon.

On the women’s side, Calvin holds a 14.5 point lead over Hope as the Knights have a first place total of 66 points.

Calvin Baseball Doubleheader With Olivet Postponed For Thursday

The Calvin baseball doubleheader scheduled for Thursday has been postponed until Friday, May 1, because of rain. The doubleheader on Friday is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Olivet. The two teams will then play at Calvin on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Rain in West Michigan has also moved the MIAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments indoors. Updated sites and times can be found on the MIAA website at:MIAA Website

The MIAA Track and Field Championships are also underway at Albion and will continue Thursday and Friday. Check out the MIAA website for more information.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Albion in Regular Season Finale

ALBION—Calvin closed out its MIAA regular season campaign with an 8-1 win at Albion Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 14-6 overall and conclude the MIAA regular season at 4-2. The Knights will be the third seed for the MIAA Tournament and will face sixth-seeded Trine in a first round MIAA Tournament match at 8:00 a.m. Hope will serve as host of this year’s MIAA Tournament with outdoor play scheduled to take place at Holland Christian High School.

Baseball Team Sees Late Lead Vanish in Loss to Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS—Jockeying for position in the MIAA, the Knights have their sights set on Olivet and Adrian—not Aquinas, their cross-town rival in the WHAC. 

And even though Tuesday’s loss to the Saints didn’t affect Calvin’s hunt for the league title, it felt like it.

The Knights squandered a 4-1 lead and gave up a nine-run eighth inning to the Saints, who, after beating Calvin 5-3 in last year’s meeting at Fifth-Third Ballpark, notched a 10-4 win at Calvin Field.

Softball Falls to Olivet in Season Finale

KENTWOOD—Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Olivet on Tuesday, falling 6-3 and 8-0. Tuesday’s twinbill was picked up in the fourth inning of game one as the game began last Saturday and was then suspended until Tuesday because of rain.

ALBION—The Calvin women’s tennis team closed out its MIAA dual match season with a 6-3 win at Albion Monday afternoon to finish out the MIAA dual match campaign to 7-1 while boosting it overall record to 11-7.

Matt Schepel Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Baseball

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Matt Schepel has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in baseball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Schepel shares this week’s award with Alma third baseman Jeremy Stephens.

Julie Bratt Resets Calvin Triple Jump Record at Hillsdale Relays

HILLSDALE—School records continued to fall for the Calvin women’s track and field team on the final day of competition at the Hillsdale Gina Relays Saturday afternoon. For the third time this spring, senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) reset her own school mark in the triple jump, recording an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 39-1 1/4, becoming the first individual in Calvin women’s track and field history to hit the 39-foot mark in the triple jump. Bratt’s jump was the third school record of the meet for the Knights as senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) set a school mark in the 1500 meters and junior Elizabeth Smit in the 3,000 meter steeplechase the night before.
