Women’s Cross Country Team Ranked Number-One/Men Ranked Fourth

The Calvin women’s cross country team will head into next week’s NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet as the nation’s number-one ranked team. The Knights are once again ranked number-one in the latest Division III Top-25 poll released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Calvin received six first place votes in this week’s poll with Williams (MA) receiving two first place votes.

The MIAA pre-season coaches’ polls in men’s and women’s basketball have been released. On the men’s side, Calvin has been pegged as the pre-season MIAA favorite. On the women’s side, Calvin has been picked to finish second.

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team returns eight letterwinners from a team that finished in fourth place in the 2008 MIAA standings. The eight returners will mesh with eight first-year swimmers.

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team will head into the 2008-09 season as the four-time defending MIAA champions. Whether or not the Knights can make it five in a row remains to be seen but the Knights do return several letterwinners on which to build their championship hopes.

ADRIAN—Michael Holwerda and Scott Hooker combined for three goals and two assists as Calvin knocked off Adrian 3-0 Wednesday night under the lights at Adrian’s Performance Stadium. The win clinched Calvin’s second straight outright MIAA championship and was coach Chris Hughes’ 100th victory.

GRAND RAPIDS – Calvin began its quest to claim its fifth consecutive MIAA Tournament title on Tuesday, using a balanced scoring attack to sweep Kalamazoo in the first round, 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.

Carly Prins scored twice as Calvin beat Adrian 4-0 Tuesday to advance to the MIAA tournament championship game. The MIAA-leading Knights picked up six points in the tournament semi-final game and host Alma in Saturday’s championship game.

Three Calvin fall sports athletes have received MIAA Player of the Week honors. In men’s soccer, Calvin senior A.J. Dufendach has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week. In volleyball, Calvin junior Sara Kramer has been named MIAA Player of the Week with senior Lauren DeGroot receiving MIAA Specialty Player of the Week accolades.
