Calvin Cross Country Teams Take Knight Invitational Titles

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For many senior runners like Jed Christiansen, Saturday’s Knight Invitational marked their final collegiate race at Gainey Sports Complex – home to Calvin’s men’s and women’s cross country squads.
But it also marked the beginning to a promising 2008 season, as Christiansen (Greenville, Penn.) helped to bolster a first-place finish for the men’s team while sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, Minn.) paced the women to a similar outcome.

GRAND RAPIDS—The momentum of a large and vocal crowd inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center was not enough to lift the Calvin women’s volleyball team to victory Friday night against rival Hope as the Flying Dutch handed the Knights a 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 defeat.

MARSHALL—The Calvin men’s golf team had another strong performance in MIAA play, finishing tied for third place at an MIAA outing hosted by Albion Tuesday afternoon at the Medalist Golf Club.
Calvin tied for third place with Trine University, recording a team score of 321 strokes. Olivet again took first place, recording a score of 310 strokes, three strokes ahead of second place Hope.

For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin College freshman Rebecca Kamp has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s volleyball. A 6-1 middle-hitter out of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp had 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .467 in leading the Knights to a league victory over Trine University last Tuesday night. She also had nine digs and three blocks in the contest.

Volleyball Upsets ONU and Wittenberg At Border Battle

Calvin closed out the two-day Wittenberg Border Battle with a pair of upset victories over nationally-ranked opponents Saturday afternoon. Calvin opened with a 25-14, 14-25, 26-24, 25-21 victory over 10th-ranked Ohio Northern. The win marked Calvin’s second victory of the year over the Polar Bears. Ranked 18th in the most recent Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin then rattled off an impressive 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 victory over fifth-ranked and host Wittenberg.
