Calvin Summer Knightfile Magazine
The latest edition of Calvin’s Knightfile Magazine is now online. The edition features Calvin’s recently completed spring sports season headlined by a look at Calvin’s long-standing steeplechase tradition in track and field. Other sports covered include men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball. This spring, Calvin senior Nick Kramer captured the national championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

There’s no shortage of clichés equating a team to a family, and there’s good reason for that. In season, athletes see each other daily, perhaps more than their respective families. Teammates liken each other to siblings. College coaches act as parental stand-ins. But for three related members of the track and field team, Lindsay VanderBrug and Carissa and Breanna Verkaik, the team-as-family cliché is more than an adage, it’s reality.

Mention the word “steeplechase” and a sparkle comes to Brian Diemer’s eyes, with good reason. A three-time U.S. Olympian in the track and field race, including a bronze medalist at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Diemer holds the steeplechase close to his heart.

The baseball team under the direction of head coach John Sparks posted an overall record of 15-25 and finished tied for sixth place in the MIAA standings with a 9-19 conference record. Calvin posted a 5-5 record on its spring trip to Tucson, Ariz., but then suffered a seven-game losing streak in mid- April. Calvin rebounded to win four of its final seven games, including a combined no-hitter between senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and freshman Nate Schepers (Holland, Mich.) in a 6-2 win over Albion. Lambers was later named MIAA Pitcher of the Week for his efforts.

“Third basemen (around the league) will be glad when he graduates,” said men’s athletic director Jim Timmer, about Calvin baseball senior Jake Van Alten. Van Alten, a four-year starter in the outfield, is a bunt specialist. Continued Timmer: “He’s got 400 at-bats in his Calvin career, and I think he has squared to bunt in about 350 of them.”

Led by head coach John Ross, the women’s basketball team produced a banner year, finishing 28-2 overall while also matching a school record for wins in a season. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title with a 15-1 league record and then won the four-team MIAA tournament capped off by a 65-43 win over rival Hope in the MIAA tournament championship game.
