The first-ever Calvin C Club Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday night inside Van Noord Arena. The following is a list of the award recipients:

Calvin College Wins MIAA Commissioner’s Cup!!!

For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin finished the year with 216 points, finishing ahead of rival Hope which earned 205 points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner’s Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women. The Commissioner’s Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5. In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 102 points, finishing ahead of Hope which tallied 93. Calvin also took first place in the MIAA Women’s All-Sports standings with 114 points, edging Hope by two points. The 2012-13 academic year was an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.
Mary Hoogstra Named to All-MIAA Second Team in Women’s Lacrosse

All-MIAA Women's Lacrosse Teams
Calvin College junior Mary Hoogstra has been named to the All-MIAA second team in women’s lacrosse. Hoogstra is the first individual in Calvin women’s lacrosse history to receive All-MIAA honors of any kind as the Knights recently completed their inaugural season of varsity play. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Hoogstra was a standout on defense this spring for Calvin. She was credited with 45 ground balls this spring and was successful in winning 21 draw controls. She was also able to be a part of the offensive attack, scoring five goals along with two assists for a total of seven points.Calvin finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 4-13. The Knights were 2-4 in conference play which was good for a three-way tie for fourth place in the final league standings.
Women’s Lacrosse Concludes Season With 10-1 Victory Over Olivet

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team hosted the Comets of Olivet on Saturday afternoon, which also happened to be Calvin’s final regular season game and senior day for the Knights. The first senior class of women’s varsity lacrosse is attacker Nicole Perragaux, midfielder Yelena Davis, and goalkeeper Lauren Spoelstra. The Knights were able to win on senior day, building a 4-0 lead by halftime en route to a 10-1 victory. Slaughter led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Perragux chipped in two goals while Holwerda added one goal and an assist. In goal, Lauren Spoelstra made five saves to earn the win.The win ends the inaugural Calvin women’s lacrosse varsity season. Calvin’s final record is 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, tied for fourth in conference. Olivet drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference.
Women’s Lacrosse Defeated at Hope 10-4

HOLLAND - Calvin’s MIAA Tournament hopes came to a close with a 10-4 loss at rival Hope Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the year, Calvin nipped Hope 10-9 in a non-conference game but on Wednesday, Hope turned the tables with a strong second half. Calvin (3-12 overall, 1-4 MIAA) battled Hope to a 2-2 halftime draw but the host Flying Dutch (5-8 overall, 3-2 MIAA) scored five unanswered goals in the second half to build a 9-3 lead and never looked back.Both teams finished with 25 shots and Calvin held a 22-20 edge in ground balls but Hope was able to find the back of the net more often than the Knights. Calvin received lone goals from freshman Cory Remy (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS), sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat (Princeport, Nova Scotia/Cobequid Educational Centre), sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS). Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had 10 saves in goal for Calvin. The Knights conclude their season on Saturday, hosting Olivet at 12:30 p.m.
Women’s Lacrosse Beaten by Pacific (OR) 10-3 in Non-Conference Action

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team took a weekend break from its conference schedule on Saturday to host Pacific University of Oregon at Zuidema Field. Unfortunately for the Knights, a slow start allowed the Boxers to jump out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 10-3 victory. Nikita Blaauwendraat had two goals and Michelle Holwerda one goal for the Knights in defeat. Calvin moves to 3-11 on the year while Pacific is now 8-4. The Knights return to conference action on Wednesday against rival Hope College. The game will be played at Hope, with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Women’s Lacrosse Defeated at Alma 14-4

ALMA - Calvin dropped to 3-11 overall and to 1-4 in the MIAA with a 14-4 loss at Alma Friday afternoon at Bahlke Stadium. Alma led 7-1 at halftime and then scored seven more times in the second half to clinch the win.
Freshman Sierra Slaughter (Hyde Park, NY) had a pair of goals to lead the Calvin offensive attach while junior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland Christian HS) also scored for the Knights. Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) had 10 saves in goal for Calvin. The Knights will host Pacific on Saturday at Calvin at 11 a.m.
Women’s Lacrosse Picks Up First Conference Win - Defeats Trine 9-6

The Calvin College women’s lacrosse team earned its first MIAA victory in program history on Saturday afternoon. Hosting the Thunder of Trine University, Calvin broke a 6-6 tie with 24:33 remaining in the game and added two insurance goals en route to a 9-6 victory. Senior Nicole Perragaux scored the first goal of the game just over two minutes in. Freshman Caroyln Forbes then added a goal off a free position attempt before Trine scored its first goal of the match. The two teams then traded goals until junior Michelle Holwerda put the ball in the back of the net with 1:53 remaining in the first half to give the Knights a 6-4 advantage, which they would take into halftime. A pair of beautiful assists from Holwerda to Perragaux and sophomore Lissa Busscher then gave the Knights an 8-6 lead before Holwerda netted her second goal of the game with 19:39 remaining to bring the score to 9-6. The Knights improve to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA while Trine drops to 1-4 and 0-2 in the conference. Calvin’s next game is scheduled for next week Friday when the Knights travel to Alma for another conference match. The game against the Scots is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Calvin C Club to Hold First-Ever Calvin Athletics Awards Night May 8

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

First MIAA Victory Eludes Women’s Lacrosse in 7-6 Loss to Albion

Looking for its first MIAA victory as a varsity sport, the women’s lacrosse team hosted Albion Wednesday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Calvin could not hold on for the victory as Albion responded with five straight en route to a 7-6 Britons win. Calvin drops to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA while Albion moves to 5-4 and 2-0 in conference play. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will host the Thunder of Trine for an early afternoon contest. The conference match is slated to start at 1 p.m.
