Women’s Basketball Holds On For 55-52 Win at Adrian - Now Owns Two-Game Lead in MIAA Standings

ADRIAN – Calvin remained unbeaten on the season but not without a fight as the Knights gained a 55-52 victory at upset-minded Adrian College Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Center. Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin built a nine-point second half lead on two occasions but could never completely shake the Bulldogs. Adrian fought back from a 52-43 lead with 2:24 remaining to close to with three at 55-52 with 13 seconds remaining. A Calvin turnover with six seconds left gave Adrian a chance to tie the game but Calvin senior Jill Thomas came up with a clutch steal on the inbounds pass and was able to break away and dribble the rest of the time off the clock. With the win, Calvin now has a two-game lead in the MIAA standings as Albion defeated Hope on Saturday 63-46. Albion and hope are now both 7-2 in league play, two games behind 9-0 Calvin. Calvin will host Albion Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Women’s Basketball Rolls to Win at Saint Mary’s - Remains Unbeaten on the Year

Traveling down to Notre Dame, IN for a midweek game against Saint Mary’s, the Calvin Knights women’s basketball team continued its undefeated season, defeating the host Belles 80-54. Ranked fourth nationally, the Knights are now 16-0 overall and 8-0 in the MIAA at the mid-point of the league schedule.To go along with Kurncz’s 22 points, Verkaik added a near triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks, while Wolffis added 14 points and seven rebounds. Off the bench, Julia Hilbrands had seven points and nine rebounds. Calvin shot 67.7% in the second half en route to 52.3% shooting for the game. The Knights held the Belles to just 26.9% shooting for the game.

Women’s Basketball Claims 78-44 Non-Conference Victory at Rochester College

AUBURN HILLS - Calvin rolled to a 78-44 non-conference victory over Rochester College Saturday afternoon at Oakland Christian High School. Ranked fourth nationally, the Knights are now 15-0 on the year. Calvin led 41-23 at halftime and never looked back, outscoring the host Warriors 37-21 over the final 20 minutes of play. Calvin’s post tandem of juniors Carissa Verkaik and Julia Hilbrands combined for 30 points with Verkaik collecting 16 points, six rebounds and five assists while Hilbrands had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. 13 Calvin players reached the scoring column as the Knights shot 47.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded Rochester 40-30.  Calvin was 8-of-22 from three-point range with six different players connecting on at least one trifecta. Junior Kelsey Irwin and sophomore Shelby Sheehan had two three-point field goals apiece.
