Calvin Shoots Down Chicago 68-50 in Round of 16 NCAA III Tournament Game

CHICAGO, IL - For the third time in school history, the Calvin women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA III Quarterfinals. The Knights advanced to the national quarterfinals with a 68-50 victory over second-ranked Chicago Friday night in a Round of 16 NCAA III Tournament game. Calvin (28-1) will face St. Thomas (29-1) in a national quarterfinal game Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST) at Chicago’s Ratner Center. Tickets will be available at the door. In its win over Chicago, Calvin led 30-20 at halftime and then built a double-digit lead at 51-40 on a three-pointer by Jill Thomas with six minutes to go and never looked back. Calvin was led in scoring by Carissa Verkaik with 20 points while junior Ally Wolffis had 10 points. Julia Hilbrands had nine points off the bench while senior Courtney Kurncz had eight points. Calvin shot 57.1 percent from the field including 50 percent (7-of-14) from three-point range. Calvin is now 18-13 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.

Women’s Basketball Team to Face U. of Chicago Tonight in Round of 16 Game

The Calvin women’s basketball team will face the University of Chicago Friday night at 9 p.m. (EST). The game will be part of a four-team sectional at the University of Chicago. Tufts (23-6) and St. Thomas (28-1) will meet in the first game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (EST) with Calvin (27-1) and Chicago (27-0) meeting in the other first round game Friday at 9 p.m. (EST) Friday’s winners will play in the sectional final Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST) at Chicago’s Ratner Center. Tickets will be $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for students, senior citizens and children under 12. A limited amount of tickets are also expected to be available at the door Friday night.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - For the fifth time in school history and for the first time since 2007, the Calvin women’s basketball team is headed to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament.Calvin punched its ticket to the Round of 16 with a scintillating 76-71 second round NCAA III Tournament victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday evening inside Van Noord Arena. Ranked fifth nationally, Calvin (27-1) will face second-ranked Chicago (27-0) in a Round of 16 game next Friday at a site to be announced Sunday. The Calvin/Chicago game will feature a rematch of an NCAA III Tournament game between the two Midwest foes from a year ago that Chicago claimed by a 67-62 score in Grand Rapids.
