Women’s Basketball Receives Academic Honors From WBCA - Places Fifth on NCAA III List

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced its 2008-2009 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior college/Community College and Calvin College is one of 25 Division III schools that have been so honored. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2008-2009 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Calvin women’s basketball team compiled a 3.503 cumulative grade point average, leaving the Knights ranked fith on the list of 25 Division III teams that made the honor roll. This is the fourth straight year that Calvin has received the honor.
Calvin Teams and Athletes Receive MIAA Academic Honors

A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.
Calvin Breaks NCAA III Single Game Attendance Record for Women’s Hoops - 3rd in Overall Attendance

Calvin College has finished third in the final NCAA III women’s basketball attendance standings with an average of 1,053 fans per game. Calvin’s attendance mark was strengthened by an NCAA III single-game attendance record of 4,395 fans for its January 7, 2009, game against Trine University. The January game against Trine served as the first-ever varsity basketball game inside Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The single-game attendance record was confirmed by the NCAA statistics office this afternoon. It breaks the previous NCAA III single-game attendance mark of 4,356 fans established by Howard Payne (TX) during an NCAA III Tournament second round game against Chapman on March 3, 2007.
