Women’s Basketball Gains Come-From-Behind Win at Manchester in Season Opener

MANCHESTER, IN – Calvin survived an upset bid by host Manchester Tuesday night, securing a 48-43 victory in its season-opener. Ranked sixth by one national poll and fifth in another, Calvin trailed 21-12 at halftime and shot just 35 percent overall but used a stingy defensive effort over the final 10 minutes of the game to gain the win. Junior center Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was key to the Calvin comeback, recording her 26th collegiate double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to go with seven blocked shots. Of her 20 points, 14 came in the second half.
Women’s Basketball Drops Exhibition Game at Ferris State in Overtime

BIG RAPIDS - The Calvin women’s basketball team traveled to Ferris State for an exhibition game Tuesday night and came away with a 75-73 overtime loss. Verkaik led all scorers with 24 points to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Senior Jill Thomas (West Catholic HS) added 12 points on the strength of four three-point field goals while junior Ally Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) had eight points and freshman Kayla Engelhard (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) had seven points.
Calvin will officially open its season next Tuesday when it travels to Manchester for a 6 p.m. contest.
Women’s Basketball Picked as MIAA Preseason Favorite - Men Picked to Finish Second in MIAA Polls

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Calvin College has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the MIAA women’s basketball championship as the Knights received eight first place votes in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll. Fellow defending co-champion Hope received the other first place vote in the women’s poll. The Flying Dutch are picked to finish second in the poll, with Saint Mary’s third. In the men’s poll, the defending MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen captured seven first-place votes, while Calvin received one first-place vote. The Knights are picked to finish second in the poll, followed by Adrian.
