Women’s Basketball Defeated by University of Chicago 67-62 in Second Round NCAA III Tournament Game

Despite overcoming a large deficit in the second half, the Knights missed keys shots down the stretch and were unable to secure a lead in the final minutes of the game as a very talented and physical University of Chicago team defeated Calvin 67-62 Saturday evening in a second round NCAA III Tournament game Saturday night at Van Noord Arena. Chicago entered the game ranked fifth in the Division III Coaches poll and sixth by d3hoops.com. Calvin came in ranked 13th in the Division III Coaches poll and 18th by d3hoops.com Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 big blocks on defense. Courtney Kurncz added 11 points, Jill Thomas chipped in 8, and Ally Wolffis and Julia Hilbrands both finished with 7 each for the Knights.
Chicago Rolls To Win Over Hanover in First Round of NCAA III Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - The fifth-ranked Chicago Maroons used the sister tandem of Meghan and Mogan Herrick to roll to a 76-62 win over Hanover College in a first round NCAA III Tournament at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena Friday night. Meghan Herrick exploded for a game-high 25 points on 10 of 14 shooting while sister Morgan Herrick had 13 points as Chicago led 44-27 at halftime and was never seriously threatened by Hanover (25-2). Junior center Taylor Simpson was also a force for Chicago with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hanover was led by Molly Martin with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Torin Franz chipped in with 11 points.

After defeating rival Hope College in the MIAA Tournament Championship to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament, the Calvin Knights defended its home turf and won a decisive first round NCAA III Tournament victory over La Roche College, defeating the Red Hawks by a score of 73-37. Despite being subbed out a majority of the second half, sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI) led the Knights with what was just shy of a triple double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Sophomore Ally Wolffis added 10 points. The Knights will face fifth-ranked Chicago in a second round game at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Chicago defeated Hanover 76-62 in Friday’s initial first round game.
