Women’s Basketball Claims Battle of Unbeatens in MIAA Contest at Trine

ANGOLA, IN - In a battle of unbeaten teams, Calvin used a strong second half surge to claim a 53-37 victory at Trine University Wednesday night in an MIAA contest. Ranked fourth in the most recent d3hoops.com Top 25 poll of the year, Calvin is now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA. Trine slips to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. Calvin’s victory marked its 11th consecutive victory over Trine dating back to the 2005-06 season. Junior Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 17 points to move past Mindi Andringa and into sixth place on the Calvin career scoring list. Junior Ally Wolffis had her best game of the year, scoring nine points and corralling a season-high 10 rebounds. Freshman Kayla Engelhard chipped in with eight points including a pair of three-pointers. Senior Courtney Kurncz also had a strong all-around game with six points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.
Women’s Basketball Opens Home Schedule With 64-46 Win Over Adrian

Playing in its first home game of the season, the Calvin women’s basketball team hosted the Adrian Bulldogs Saturday afternoon. Calvin recorded a 64-46 win to remain unbeaten on the season. Carissa Verkaik led the Knights on offense with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Kelsey Irwin finished with nine points and Courtney Kurncz added eight. Irwin had a trio of triples and in doing so, moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Calvin career three-point list with 93. Senneca Scott led the Bulldogs on offense with 12 points and seven rebounds while Boggs chipped in nine points and senior Jenn Headley added eight. Calvin moves to 7-0 on the year and 2-0 in conference with the win, while Adrian is now 1-4 and 0-2 in the MIAA.
Women’s Basketball Holds On For 69-60 Win at Albion in MIAA Opener

ALBION - Fourth-ranked Calvin survived a frigid second half shooting performance to claim a 69-60 victory at Albion Wednesday night in the MIAA opener for both teams. Wednesday’s game was a tale of two halves. In the first half, Calvin bolted out to a 17-point lead and threatened to blow the game wide open. Calvin (6-0 overall, 1-0 MIAA shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes but allowed Albion to score the final five points of the half to give the host Britons (1-4 overall, 0-1 MIAA) a boost of momentum. Albion closed to within three before a triple by junior Kelsey Irwin, a bucket inside by Julia Hilbrands and two free throws by senior Jill Thomas helped clinch the win for the Knights. Hillbrands had a huge game for Calvin off the bench with 17 points and eight rebounds, connecting on 8 of 9 attempts from the field. Junior Carissa Verkaik notched her 30th career double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots while Thomas had 12 points. Irwin added nine off the bench on 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range.
