Women’s Basketball Records 74-38 Win at Luther College - Now 11-0 on Season

DECORAH, IA - Calvin improved to 11-0 on the year with a 74-38 victory at Luther College Saturday afternoon. The Knights used swarming man-to-man defense to gain the win as Luther shot just 22.2 percent from the field including just 17.9 percent in the second half. Ranked fourth by d3hoops.com, Calvin also connected on eight three-pointers in the win led by junior guard Kelsey Irwin who was 4-for-5 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 12 points. Junior Carissa Verkaik was next with 11 points to go with eight rebounds and six blocked shots while junior Julia Hilbrands came off the bench to provide 10 points and nine rebounds. In scoring 11 points on Saturday, Carissa Verkaik moves past Kerry Walters for third place on the Calvin career scoring list. Verkaik currently has 1,333 points in her career with Walters now fourth at 1,332 points. The Knights return to action next Wednesday, traveling to Kalamazoo for a 6 p.m. conference game.

Women’s Basketball Claims 60-40 Victory at Wisconsin-LaCrosse in Family Affair

LACROSSE, WI - Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross will carry family bragging rights into the new year. On Friday afternoon, his fourth-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team claimed a 60-40 victory over the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The host Eagles include Mark Ross, a younger brother of John Ross, as an assistant coach on its coaching staff. Calvin was led by junior center Carissa Verkaik who poured in 27 points along with 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals to notch her 32nd career double-double and her seventh double-double of the season. Junior post Julia Hilbrands added 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench while junior forward Ally Wolffis had nine points and seven rebounds. Senior Courtney Kurncz also keyed a Calvin defense that recorded 13 steals as she picked up five steals individually.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Olivet 72-33 - Moves Back into Tie for First Place in MIAA Standings

The fourth-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team moved back into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with a 72-33 win over Olivet Saturday in a conference contest at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin is now 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA. The Knights are tied with rival Hope for first place in the league standings. Calvin scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back. The Knights led 33-8 at halftime and continued to stretch their lead in the second half. Junior center Carissa Verkaik led all scorers with 19 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. With her 19 points, she moves past Sharon Boeve (1,285) and Sarah Ondersma (1,288) for fourth place on the Calvin career scoring list with 1,295 points.
