ROYAL OAK – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin College forward Brook Van Eck its first recipient of the league’s Player of the Week award in women’s basketball for the new season.
Van Eck, a junior from Lowell (Lowell HS), didn’t miss a shot in the Knights’ 64-49 season-opening win over Madonna. Van Eck connected on all eight of her shots from the field and was 3-of-3 from the foul line in scoring a career-high 20 points, while playing just 23 minutes. She also grabbed four rebounds and added four steals.

The MIAA pre-season coaches’ polls in men’s and women’s basketball have been released. On the men’s side, Calvin has been pegged as the pre-season MIAA favorite. On the women’s side, Calvin has been picked to finish second.

After faltering in the first round of the MIAA Tournament last season – their first time doing so since 2002-03 – the Knights will look to compound experience and a promising freshman class in hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the John Ross Era.

Calvin College seniors Caleb Veldhouse and Marcia Harris have been named pre-season All-Americans in men’s and women’s basketball respectively. Veldhouse has been named a pre-season All-American by Division III News while Harris has been so honored by sister publication Women’s Division III News.
