GRAND RAPIDS—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team held off a determined Madonna squad Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Crusaders 59-56 at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Madonna (4-6) held a 53-51 lead with under five minutes remaining but the Knights (11-1) retook the lead at 54-53 on a triple by freshman Kelsey Irwin (Fraser HS) with 3:57 left to play. The triple was the fourth of the game for Irwin who played a key role in cracking Madonna’s zone defense.

OLIVET—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA with a 78-54 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon.
At 10-1, Calvin is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season when it won 25 of its first 26 games.
Calvin’s inside attack proved too much for Olivet to overcome as freshman center Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) had 26 points on 12 of 13 shooting while senior forward Brook Van Eck (Lowell HS) had 11 points and freshman forward Allison Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) 10 points. Sophomore wing Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns HS) also had nine points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of assists.

The Knights made a big statement in early conference play with a 78-35 victory over Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon.
Calvin, now 9-1 and 2-0 in conference, led 43-12 at half and outrebounded Kalamazoo, now 0-8 and 0-3 in the MIAA, by a margin of 45-40.
Calvin broke the game wide open from the first minute of a game it never trailed in.

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team opened its MIAA campaign on a winning note, defeating Saint Mary’s 64-58 at the Van Noord Arena Friday night in a game that had originally been scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed because of weather conditions.
Friday’s game featured a rematch of last year’s MIAA Tournament semifinals, won by Saint Mary’s. In fact, the Belles (4-3 overall, 1-1 MIAA) won all three meetings against Calvin last year but on Friday, Calvin came out on top thanks to a solid all-around team effort.

Tonight’s Saint Mary’s at Calvin women’s basketball game has been postponed because of a winter blizzard warning throughout western Michigan.
The game has been rescheduled for Friday, December 11 at 5 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.

HAMMOND, IN—Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik put together one of the finest single-game performances in Calvin women’s basketball history Saturday evening in leading the Knights to an 81-73 victory at Purdue Calumet University.
The Holland Christian High School graduate poured in 39 points, grabbed 23 rebounds and blocked five shots. Verkaik was 15 of 24 from the floor, connected on her only three-point field goal attempt and swished 8 of 10 from the free throw line.

KENOSHA, WI - In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Carthage put on the defensive clamps to hand the Calvin women’s basketball team its first loss of the year, defeating the Knights 58-47.
Carthage (6-0) limited Calvin (6-1) to just 32.8 percent field goal shooting and scored 23 points off of 22 Calvin turnovers to gain the win.
Senior Brook Van Eck (Lowell HS) led Calvin in defeat with 12 points while freshman Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) had 10 points. Diana Jacklin led Carthage with 21 points and six rebounds.
Carthage was also 10 of 12 at the free throw line while Calvin was just 4 of 4 at the stripe.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Purdue-Calumet University for a 6 p.m. (EST) contest.

MANCHESTER, IN—A few hours after moving into the top 25 in both the D3hoops.com and USA Today / ESPN Coaches national polls, the Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 60-44 victory at Manchester College Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the day, Calvin cracked both national polls as the Knights are ranked 25th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and 19th in the USA Today / ESPN Coaches poll.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through November 29.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 49 points, pulled down 26 rebounds and blocked nine shots in earning tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the Olivet Comet Classic. She scored 26 points and added 13 rebounds in a 79-66 victory over Elmhurst, Ill., then came back the next day to score 23 points, pull down 13 boards and block five shots as the
Knights defeated Siena Heights, 86-73.

OLIVET—The Calvin women’s basketball team upped its season record to 5-0 Saturday afternoon with an 86-73 victory over Siena Heights University in a second round game of the Olivet Thanksgiving Classic. Freshman Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) notched her fourth double-double of the season and her second of the tournament with 23 points and 13 rebounds to go with five blocked shots.
