The Calvin women’s basketball team dropped a 68-49 decision at Hope in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday. Calvin led 21-17 but Hope scored the final 15 points of the first half, en route to a 32-21 halftime lead. Calvin would never get closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Calvin was led in defeat by Carissa Verkaik with 12 points and 9 rebounds while Brook Van Eck had 10 points. Calvin will now hope for an at-large (Pool C) bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament. Bids will be announced Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. (EST).

Communications and Marketing student videographer Mike Zaagman provides highlights from Calvin’s final regular season meeting with Hope on February 3, 2010. The two teams will tangle again in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse at 3 p.m.
Saturday’s winner will gain an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament. Hope (26-1) is ranked fourth nationally while Calvin (24-3) is ranked 11th.

Thursday nightís MIAA Tournament semifinal game between the Knights and Belles saw Calvin set a new MIAA Tournament record for made field goals as Calvin connected on 38 field goals in racing away to a 90-71 victory over Saint Mary’s at Van Noord Arena. The explosive offense that the Knights have possessed all year, led by freshman sensation Carissa Verkaik, shot nearly 60 percent from the field and now will play Saturday afternoon in the conference tournament finals which will be hosted by Hope. The previous MIAA Tournament single-game field goal record was 37, set by Albion in a 90-87 loss to Hope in a first round MIAA tournament game in 1996.

The Calvin women’s basketball team defeated Olivet in a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena 76-57. The Knights (23-3) will face Saint Mary’s (15-11) in a semifinal game Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. In Calvin’s win over Olivet, the Knights connected on 12 three-point shots including four from freshman Kelsey Irwin. Freshman Carissa Verkaik led Calvin in scoring with 15 points to go with nine rebounds. Irwin had 12 points while senior Amber Benthem had 10 points and four assists.

For the third time this year, Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s basketball. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik established an MIAA single-game scoring record Wednesday as she scored 46 points in leading the Knights to a 93-77 victory over Adrian.
The previous single-game record had been 42 points, set by Hopes Kari Nysse against Albion in 1996. Verkaik also set another MIAA single-game record with 18 field goals, breaking the previous mark of 17 set by Calvin’s Eileen Boonstra in 1980 and matched two years later by Laura Knapp of Adrian.

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team escaped Alma Saturday afternoon with a 65-62 victory to finish league play at 14-2. The Knights trailed 59-56 with 3:20 left to play but layup by Carissa Verkaik and a triple by Leah Mattson gave the Knights the lead for good. Verkaik had 18 points to win the MIAA scoring crown. Allison Wolffis also had 12 points and Brook Van Eck 11 points. Calvin will host Olivet in a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday night, Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik established a new Calvin and MIAA single-game scoring record with 46 points in a 93-77 victory over Adrian. Verkaik was 18 of 20 from the field, 3 of 3 from three-point range and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Her 18 field goals is also a new Calvin and MIAA single-game record. Her scoring performance is also a single-game high in NCAA III women’s basketball this season.
On Thursday, Grand Rapids ABC affiliate WZZM-TV 13 swung by the Calvin campus for a feature story on Verkaik’s scoring performance.

Itís always great to see athletes rewrite the record books.
Wednesday night in the last regular season game at the Van Noord Arena, freshman Carissa Verkaik of Holland Christian High School rewrote the Calvin record books, carving her name into Knights history as she scored 46 points, the new Calvin and MIAA single game scoring record. ALBION—The Calvin women’s basketball team hit the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 2006-07 season and for the 11th time in program history with a 64-55 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon at Kresge Gymnasium.
Calvin is now 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the MIAA play. The Knights have also clinched the number-two for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. Hope clinched the top seed and a share of the MIAA regular season title on Saturday with a 94-75 victory over Saint Mary’s on Saturday.

The 2000 national championship Calvin men’s basketball team will be honored this Saturday at halftime of the Calvin-Kalamazoo varsity men’s basketball game. Saturday’s game will mark a 10-year reunion for the 2000 Knights who finished the season 30-2 overall including a 14-0 record in MIAA play. The reunion coincides with Calvin’s recently created uKnight Week which features activities for Calvin alumni, faculty, students and staff in February.
On Wednesday night as part of uKnight Week festivities, alumni of the Calvin women’s basketball team were honored at halftime of the Calvin-Trine women’s varsity basketball game.
