Women’s Basketball Back in d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Calvin women’s basketball team has moved back into the d3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 23rd in this week’s poll, marking the third time Calvin has been nationally-ranked. The Knights were in the poll in the 24th spot prior to taking a trip to California over Christmas break but dropped out of the poll during the first week of January. Thomas More (KY) is this week’s top-ranked team by d3hoops.com.

Calvin picked up three conference victories last week to improve to 15-3 overall and to 9-0 in the MIAA. The Knights will travel to Albion on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Ally Wolffis Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Saint Mary’s guard Maggie Ronan and Calvin forward Ally Wolffis its Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 22. Wolffis, a sophomore from Muskegon (Mona Shores HS), scored 36 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the week as the Knights won three straight games to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. She scored seven points, including a key basket and free throw down the stretch, as Calvin handed top-ranked Hope its first loss of the season, 56-55 on Tuesday night. The Calvin victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against Hope and allowed the Knights to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.

Women’s Basketball Opens Second Half of MIAA Schedule With 74-60 Win Over Saint Mary’s

Calvin rolled to a 74-60 victory over MIAA foe St. Mary’s on Saturday.The Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes after a Logan Marsh fast break lay-up began the scoring.Calvin led by as much as 20 in the first half, thanks largely to sophomore Julia Hilbrand’s scoring input.  Hilbrands recorded nine points in the first half.  The Knights led 39-25 at half time. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik led the Knights with 20 points and 12 rebounds to notch her 21st collegiate double-double.  Hilbrands tallied a career high 19 points.  Sophomore Ally Wolffis also notched 14 points and six rebounds.

Video Highlights of Calvin/Hope Women’s Basketball Game Now Online

Calvin student video producer Mike Zaagman has put together a video package of Calvin’s thrilling 56-55 upset victory over top-ranked Hope Tuesday night in women’s basketball. The victory snapped Calvin’s eight-game losing skid to Hope and put the Knights on top of the MIAA standings. Zaagman’s video package includes a near half-court shot by Jill Thomas at the close of the first half as well as the thrilling final seconds of regulation.

Women’s Basketball Keeps Foot on the Gas In 81-37 Victory Over Trine

The Calvin women’s basketball team showed no signs of a letdown Thursday night in an 81-37 victory over the visiting Trine University Thunder. The victory came just two days after an emotional 56-55 victory over rival Hope. With the win over Trine, Calvin (14-3 overall) finishes the first half of the MIAA schedule with an unbeaten 8-0 record, one game ahead of 7-1 Hope and two games ahead of 6-2 Albion. Sophomore Ally Wolffis had 15 points to lead Calvin in scoring while sophomore Carissa Verkaik had 12 points. Senior guard Allie Duernberger (pictured left), junior guard Jill Thomas and sophomore center Julia Hilbrands added nine points apiece.

Women’s Basketball Upsets Top-Ranked Hope 56-55 at Van Noord Arena

In a clash of MIAA powers, Calvin topped top-ranked rival for the first time in nine games.The Knights prevailed 56-55 after a last second jump shot by Hope fell short.  The victory advances Calvin to 7-0 in conference and 13-3 overall. It also snapped Hope’s 35-game MIAA regular season win streak. The Knights are now in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings, one game ahead of Hope and Albion. It also marks the second time that Calvin has upset the Dutch as a top-ranked opponent, doing the same in 2007 in a 60-57 triumph at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin is now 25-4 all-time at Van Noord Arena and is 2-0 this year at home against top-10 ranked opponents. Calvin also defeated (then) fifth-ranked Carthage 69-59 on December 8 at home.

Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten In League Play With 65-50 Win at Alma

ALMA, MI - The Calvin women’s basketball team remained unbeaten in league play with a 65-50 win at Alma College Saturday afternoon.  The victory sets up a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings next Tuesday night between Calvin and Hope at Van Noord Arena as both teams will head into the contest with 6-0 league records. Calvin (12-3 overall) dominated play in the first half against the Scots (1-14 overall, 0-6 MIAA) as the Knights build a 43-13 halftime lead. Calvin substituted liberally throughout the second half to cruise to the win. Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik led the Knights with 25 points and 11 rebounds along with four blocked shots and three steals in just 20 minutes of action to notch her 19th collegiate double-double including her eighth double-double of the season. Women’s Basketball Picks Up 71-49 Non-Conference Win Over Rochester College

After a tight first half, the Knights rolled to a 71-49 victory against Rochester College on Tuesday night.  Calvin led 28-25 at half-time and trailed for significant portions of the first half, at one point trailing by eight.  The Knights shot a mere 30% in the first half, and struggled to make good on some open looks in the post.  But Calvin stormed out of half-time, going on a 15-1 run in the first eight minutes.  The Knights established the post well, with sophomores Ally Wolffis and Carissa Verkaik scoring Calvin’s first eight points of the half. Verkaik finished with 16 points and eight rebounds while Wolffis had eight points and sophomore Julia Hilbrands had eight points and six boards.

Women’s Basketball Picks Up 68-34 Win Over Olivet

The Calvin Knights reopened conference play with a dominating 68-34 victory over the Olivet Comets on Saturday afternoon. Everyone on the Knights’ roster chipped in at least nine minutes.  The scoring also showed good balance.  Six players scored more than five points.  Sophomore Carissa Verkaik put up a double-double in the first half alone and finished with 16 points and 15 boards. Junior Jill Thomas had nine points as did sophomore Julia Hilbrands.

Women’s Basketball Clipped by Cal Lutheran at Posada Royale Classic

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end as the Knights were defeated by a determined Cal Lutheran squad 66-61 at the Posada Royale Holiday Classic Friday night. The host Regals (6-5) stretched their winning streak to five games in the process. Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Carissa Verkaik who notched her 17th collegiate double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ally Wolffis also had 17 points despite playing only 17 minutes because of foul trouble. Sophomore Kelsey Irwin also had nine points - all on three-point shots - while junior Courtney Kurncz had eight points and six boards. Verkaik and Wolffis were both named to the all-tournament team.
