Women’s Basketball Opens Season With 62-48 Win Over Manchester at Van Noord Arena

In its opening game of the 2010-11 season, Calvin defended its home court well against Manchester College as the Knights rolled to a 62-48 victory. An extremely young team that is returning only two starters from last year and having only two seniors on the roster, the Knights showed they do have some work to do in terms of gelling more as a team, but Calvin
played strong defensively and sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI) scored a team-leading 25 points to give the Knights their first win of the year.

2010-11 Calvin Women's Basketball Schedule
The Calvin women’s basketball team will seek to continue the momentum of a 24-5 campaign of a year ago. The Knights parlayed the 24-win season into their first NCAA III Tournament appearance in four years. Calvin returns two starters and nine letterwinners from its 2009-10 team. Returning starters include 5-11 junior forward Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns, MI/St. Johns HS) and 6-2 sophomore center Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI/Holland Christian HS). Other returning letterwinners include 5-3 senior guard Leah Morrison (Chelsea, MI/Chelsea HS), 5-6 senior guard Allie Duernberger (Long Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS), 5-7 junior point guard Leah Mattson (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac HS), 5-6 junior guard Jill Thomas (Grand Rapids, MI/West Catholic HS), 5-5 sophomore guard Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI/Fraser HS), 5-11 sophomore forward Ally Wolffis (Muskegon, MI/Mona-Shores HS) and 6-0 sophomore post Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Women’s Basketball Ranked 24th in d3hoops.com Top 25 Preseason Poll

The Calvin women’s basketball team has cracked another pre-season Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 24th in the d3hoops.com Top 25 pre-season poll released this weekend. The Knights have also been ranked 19th in the pre-season issue of Women’s Division III News.
Amherst (MA) is the number-one ranked team in the d3hoops.com Top 25 poll while MIAA rival Hope is ranked second. Of note, Carthage (WI) is ranked ninth. Calvin is scheduled to host Carthage on December 8.
A year ago, Calvin posted an overall record of 24-5 and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
Calvin is scheduled to open its season on November 16 when it hosts Manchester College at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.

The Calvin women’s basketball team is ranked 19th in the pre-season Top 25 poll released by Women’s Division III News. A year ago, Calvin finished 24-5 overall and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights return 2010 MIAA MVP Carissa Verkaik who heads into her sophomore season. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has been named a pre-season All-American by Women’s Division III News. Verkaik averaged 18.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game during her freshman campaign. The Calvin women’s basketball team will open its season on November 16 when it hosts Manchester College at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin's MIAA Academic Honor Roll Recipients
The 2009-10 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 143 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 19 are from Calvin.

History of Calvin's MIAA Team GPA Award Recipients
For the second consecutive year, 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2009-10 academic year – matching a Calvin record. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A year ago, Calvin established a school record as 10 of its 17 varsity teams eligible for the honor achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average.

Final NCAA III Learfield Director's Cup Standings 2009-10
For the 15th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing 14th in the nation in Division III in 2009-10 with a total of 634 points.
Calvin’s point total is its second-highest ever in the 15 years of the competition.
Calvin continues to be one of only seven schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.
Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 14th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,292.25 points.
Calvin Summer Slam Girls and Boys Basketball Tournaments to Take Place at Calvin

The 2010 Calvin Summer Slam girls and boys basketball tournaments are about to kick off with the girls tournament set to take place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (June 10-12) with the boys tournament slated to take place July 1-3. The girls tournament will feature 12 high school teams representing three different states while the boys tournament will include 16 high school teams representing four different states. Calvin Announces Recipients of Bere’ & Tiemersma Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—Calvin College has announced the 2010 recipients of its highest honors for men’s and women’s athletics: the Beré Memorial Award and the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award.
Greg Snapper of Madison, Wisconsin, is this year’s Beré Memorial Award winner while Emily Ottenhoff of Palos Heights, Illinois, is this year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award.
