Calvin Women’s Basketball Advances to MIAA Tournament Finals With 78-50 Win Over Saint Mary’s

The Calvin women’s basketball team advanced to the MIAA Tournament Championship game with a 78-50 victory over Saint Mary’s Thursday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin led 40-21 at halftime and pulled away inside the final 12 minutes of play. Junior Carissa Verkaik had 25 points to lead the Knights while junior Ally Wolffis had 13 points and freshman Kayla Engelhard 12 points. Senior Courtney Kurncz had five steals, five points, four assists and two blocked shots to aid the victory. Calvin will face rival Hope Saturday night in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Doors to the arena will open at 6:30 p.m.

Carissa Verkaik Named Capital One Division III Academic All-American in Women’s Basketball

Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named a Capital One Division III Academic All-American in women’s basketball. Verkaik has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-America Third Team. Verkaik is the second individual in Calvin women’s basketball history to receive the prestigious accolade as Lisa Winkle was an Academic All-American in both 2006 and 2007 in women’s basketball. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is averaging 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game while connecting on 56.5 percent of her field goal attempts. She has also blocked 100 shots for an average just over over four blocks per game. She is ranked nationally in both field goal percentage and blocked shots per-game average.

General Admission tickets for Thursday’s MIAA Tournament semifinal game between Calvin and Saint Mary’s will be on sale at Calvin’s website (www.calvin.edu/boxoffice), and at the Box Office Monday through Thursday, February 20 - 23 from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Tickets will also be sold at the Arena starting at 6:30pm on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Ticket Prices: General Admission tickets are FREE for MIAA students with student ID. General Admission tickets are $3.00 for any college faculty/staff and students, High School students and children, and $5.00 for all others. There is no limit on the number of tickets to be purchased.
