2012 Calvin Women's Golf Schedule

By Jordan Brink

Calvin is seeking to build upon a strong 2011-12 campaign that saw the Knights finish fourth in the final MIAA regular season standings and qualify for the four-team MIAA spring tournament for the first time in school history. While Calvin is bringing in new talent to the program, three experienced letter-winners return.  Seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) combine with Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) to put together a strong nucleus of experience and success. Doezema and Canto were both members of the All-MIAA second team last fall.

2012 Calvin Men's Golf Schedule

By Mark DeHaan

A year after capturing its first MIAA championship, the Calvin men’s golf team’s repeat bid was dismantled by a rash of injuries and an inconsistent line-up. Still, the Knights finished sixth in the MIAA and vied for a spot in the spring tournament through the very end of the fall season. Returning all but one golfer from last season and two All-MIAA performers, this fall promises to be exciting for the Knights’ golf squad. Both of Calvin’s All-MIAA performers, Ben Kuiper and Dave Sarkipato, will be seniors this year. Sarkipato was named to the second team All-MIAA while Kuiper was named to the first team All-MIAA and the MIAA MVP. Kuiper’s average round of 74.6 was best in conference and gave Calvin its first MIAA MVP in men’s golf since 1965. Kuiper was also named to the Division III Ping Great Lakes All-Region team.

2012 Calvin Women's Soccer Schedule

By Mark DeHaan

From 2005-2010, the Calvin women’s soccer team was a model of consistency as the Knights made the NCAA National tournament each of those years and won no less than 15 games.Unfortunately for the Knights, that streak ended in 2011 as one of the youngest teams in Calvin history earned a 10-10-0 overall record including a 10-6-0 mark in league play. Calvin graduated just one senior from a year ago however and returns a pair of first team All-MIAA selections in seniors Liz Cancel and Francesca Smith. Calvin will open the season on September 4 at home against 2011 national runner-up Wheaton College.

2012 Calvin Women's Cross Country Schedule

With several returning letterwinners, the Calvin women’s cross country team will seek to compete for an MIAA title and another trip to the NCAA III Championships.  A year ago, Calvin saw its five-year run as MIAA champions come to an end as rival Hope claimed first place at the MIAA Championships in October. Calvin rebounded two weeks later to claim the Great Lakes Regional title and then finished 13th at the NCAA III Championships one week later. In order to compete for a league title and a trip to the NCAA III Championships, the Knights will need to rely on a strong one-two punch up front and receive solid contributions from a deep group of returning runners.

2012 Calvin Men's Soccer Schedule

By Mitch Blankespoor

The Calvin College men’s soccer team looks to start a new season with new leadership.  A year ago, the Knights were champions of the MIAA for a record fifth year in a row, and advanced all the way to the national finals.  Calvin finished with a record of 19-6-2. The upcoming season, however, is not the only new thing upon the Calvin’s men’s soccer program.  Ryan Souders will take the reins for his first year as the Knights’ head coach. The team Souders takes over has one thing: experience in big games.  The senior class is one of the most successful in school history, having been to two national championship games and an NCAA III Elite Eight appearance.
